Young Children's Accordion Festival - UK
Hundreds
of people enjoyed a day of fun in Colchester Castle Park, England
at the annual Colchester Young Children's Accordion Festival. The
festival, was blessed with good weather which had families flocking
to the park.
There was music, entertainment and plenty of fun under a pair of large
marquees, which housed accordion exhibition stands of local and national
organizations and businesses. Education and more fun was provided
through workshops.
Performances
in the main arena by local children proved so popular that organizers
had to limit the amount of time each group performed. These
included the Colchester Accordion Elementary Band run by Elaine Beecham
who were joined by the Tiny Tots (5 to 7 years) group who played ten
pieces on their own.
The
Colchester Accordion Elementary Band is also a school which is helping
in the resurgance of the accordion in England. The Colchester Accordion
Showband, 10 times UK champions will perform next at the Colchester

Accordion
Player Spreads Music and Laughs - USA
Contributed
by Karen Heinselman
She doesn't have CDs or T-shirts to peddle, but when Judy Fasse comes
to play, it typically draws an audience. She sings, she tells jokes
and of course, there's her accordion which has made Judy Fasse the
center of attention at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.
Her eyes
sparkle as she clutches her accordion. For two decades, the Waverly
retiree has volunteered her musical talents in nearby towns including
Waverly, Shell Rock, Denver and Cedar Falls. Besides nursing homes,
she also plays at church and hires out for birthdays and anniversaries.
"I can't say it is a profession. It's not. It is a gift of love,"
she says. "I have so much fun I think that is kind of catching."

Hieb
Accordion Sisters Bring a Family Flavor - USA
It started at a family reunion about 10 years ago in Rapid City,
South Dakota. "We picked up the accordions and started playing
together and liked what we did," said Martha Reichert, the oldest
of five instrument-playing sisters between the ages of 65 and 80.
Even though the sisters had all played piano and accordion since they
were young -- growing up on a farm in Hague, North Dakota - the family
reunion marked the birth of the Hieb Accordion Sisters as a music
group. Recently, the sisters played together at an event celebrating
Hague's centennial year. "We played four hours that night for
a big dance," Holy said.
The Hieb
family moved to Rupert in 1941. Their father began farming with his
eldest sons. "We come from Lawrence Welk Country" Reichert
said of their hometown, which was a few miles away from Strasburg
where Lawrence Welk was born.
The Hieb
sisters' parents -- August and Anna Maria Hieb -- who had 11 children,
were acquainted with the Welk family, but the children did not know
Lawrence Welk personally. "He was a big shot," Reichert
said. "We liked his music and wanted to play it, too," she
added. The Hieb family still makes music when they get together. Older
brothers Leonard and Art join the sisters with musical instruments
at the reunions. "Our family reunions are one big jam session
and never lack for music," Holy said. Story by y Lorraine Cavener,
Times-News correspondent.
