classes will focus on accordion jazz, harmony and ensemble music.

Playing Summer School - Scotland
The Accordion
Playing (Scottish Style) summer school begins this weekend from 4th
July at the University of Stirling at Airthrey Castle, Stirling. Participants
on the program have come from Surrey, North Yorkshire, Fife, Central
Scotland and the Scottish Highlands representing all age ranges from
teenagers upwards. The summer school coordinator, Margery Stirling
said the university was hoping for more international participation.
"In past years we have had an international
presence with participants from USA, some European countries and Japan,"
she said. They are hoping to attract more students from other countries
for another accordion programme planned for 9th to 13th August.
Highlights of the summer school include classes where students spend
time to brush up on techniques. There will also be opportunities to
learn new music and students will even get to play with participants
from similar summer programs for Fiddle and Bodhran Playing.

Southeast
Accordion Association - USA
A Southeast
Accordion Association will soon be established. The association, to
encompass the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia,
and West Virginia is still in its planning stages. According to Karen
Adam of the Florida
Accordion Association, all the states above have very few accordion
clubs.
"This endeavor will not deter from current
accordion clubs, but will certainly enhance them," Karen
said. There is strength in numbers! Karen said the new association
plans to include a quarterly newsletter for the Southeast, as well
as holding an annual convention in a different southeastern state
each year! There are even plans to set up a SEACCASSOC Southeast Accordion
Association website!

10th
International Accordion Cycle - Portugal

The
10th International Accordion Cycle will be held at the Abbey of Santa
Maria de Alcobaça from 9th to 25th July. The event is organised
by the Association d'Accordéeon d'Alcobaça, Ecole
de Musique Serenata and the Orchestre Tipique et Coral d'Alcobaça.
The Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, whether viewed from the
top of a nearby ancient castle or from any other point is an imposing
Christian monument and was chosen by UNESCO as a monument of World-wide
Patrimony.
The concerts taking place during the 10th International Accordion
Cycle include:

Convention Takes Accordions to Tonight Show with Jay Leno - USA
The
Las Vegas
International Accordion Convention held in Nevada earlier this
month was such a success that it caught the attention of popular USA
TV talk show host Jay Leno.
Following a 3-hour filming session at Las
Vegas, The Tonight Show's Howie Mandel hosted a funny feature
comedy using footage from Las Vegas where he talked to participants
and organizers to gauge their feedback of the festival.
Howie attended a polka dance session and even "jammed" a
little, telling the Tonight Show audience that "no
one knows how to party like accordion players do!"
The Las Vegas
International Accordion Convention had 7 concerts with almost
16 hours of music programs which included polka jam sessions, performances
by classical and jazz artists like Peter and Mady Soave, Art Van Damme,
Mario Tacca and his wife (singer) Mary Mancini, the very entertaining
K-Trio,
Don Lipovac, Gary Blair from Scotland, Mirco
Patarini from Italy and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tony
Lovello. Also present were factory reps from both Scandalli
(Mirco Patarini)
and Silvetta Accordions (Bert Neidhardt) with other accordion brands
and accessories on display.
The next Las
Vegas International Convention will be held from 26th to 29th
June 2005 at the Gold Coast Hotel Casino. Next year's convention will
also be the birthday celebrations of both Dick Contino (75 Years)
and Art Van Damme (85 years).

The Band
Who Knew Too Much on European Tour - Scandinavia/Australia
The
Band Who Knew Too Much started their career playing traditional jazz.
Now the group, who are looking forward to an exciting European tour,
are writing their own songs of life in their home city of Melbourne.
The Band Who Knew Too Much draws from a wide range of styles, namely
folk/roots, jazz and ska and using piano accordion, clarinet, washboard,
drums, guitar and double bass. The band has previously toured the
US, Canada, Scandinavia, Belgium, Holland and the UK. The accordionist
in the band is Dave Andrews.
The band's are currently on tour throughout Europe till 29th August
but their July Concerts will be at the following places:

Sanders Concert - USA
Seattle
accordionist Murl Sanders will perform at the Orcas Center, San Juan
Islands from 2nd to 3rd July at 7.30 pm.
This event will be a variety concert including some of the finest
West Coast musicians including renowned classical flutist Jeffrey
Cohan and pianist, saxophonist, composer Martin Lund.

staged a well-received concert in Hannover last week. Cao
Xiao-Qing performed with celloist Ludwig Doell to accompany the
Orchester: Celle Streichorchester performing works by Sieben Worte
von Sofia Gubaidulia.

Support Olympics Relay - France
On Friday
25 June the Olympic flame lit up the city of light, Paris where it
was greeted by 50 accordion players. Thousands of Parisians gathered
to watch the 137 torchbearers that covered the 50 km in the French
capital's streets, the next stop on its international journey before
returning to Greece for the Athens Olympics on 13th August in Athens,
Greece.
Moulin Rouge ballet dancers joined the accordionists to welcome the
Flame in Montmartre while other cultural events set their own rhythm
before the arrival of the Olympic torch in the Champs Elysées,
L'Arc de Triomphe, the Pantheon, Sorbonne, Notre Dame Cathedral, the
Trocadero, l'Opera, the Town Hall, the Roland-Garros tennis courts,
the Père-Lachaise cemetery, Bastille, the Louvre and other
unique landmarks of the French capital.

The
Europamusica will be held on 6th July at the National Museum of the
Bargello at 8.30 pm.
The event is organized by the Association of Chamber Music who have
dedicated the evening to young European talents. There will be a performance
titled, "With Luciano Berio" to be directed by Maestro Vittorio
Chiarappa. Musicians at the event are to include Ivano Battiston on
accordion, soprano Laura Catrani, Carlo Chiarappa on viola and Andrea
Tacchi on violin.
Europamusica is being organized by the Istituto Francese di Firenze,
Istituto Universitario Europeo, Villa Schifanoia, Villa di Rusciano,
La Pietra - New York University in Florence, the European Parliament
and the City Hall of Florence.

Information Directory - USA
The 2004
International Accordion Directory will be published on 1st August.
Accordion Historian, Karen Gerlovich said the directory will include
the names and contact details of accordionists, bands, accordion businesses
and clubs. "It will be a hardbound directory
with thousands of names listed alphabetically state by state, country
by country," Karen said. Ms. Gerlovich also published
the 2001 and 2002 directories.

Prieto Trio at Barbes - USA
Successful
performer and tutor at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Victor
Prieto, heads up his Trio at Barbes on Park Slope, Brooklyn from 7.00pm
to 8.30pm on 8th July.
The Victor Prieto Trio is a jazz oriented group which started in Boston,
Massachusetts. They are known not only for their instrumentalists,
but for their method of moving towards newer jazz sounds.
