Birthday Celebrations for Accordions Worldwide Director - Fiji

Worldwide Director Harley
Jones began the celebrations for his 50th Birthday at the NZAA
Farewell dinner on June 1st, followed by a private dinner the following
evening for his school friends & people he grew up with.
The
main birthday events were held at his Nagigia
Island resort in Fiji. The first evening was a "Kava"
celebration followed by an evening telling stories from Harley's
past. The next night featured a poem penned by Harley's lawyer &
toasting those not able to be present, including an hilarious individual
toast by each person, to ex girlfriends!!

Pigini Sirius Gala Concert - Italy

The Pigini Sirius Gala Concert organized by
the Pigini
Factory in Castelfidardo (as a thank you to all Sirius players)
will take place on June 21st at the "Teatro la Fenice"
in Senigallia. The event is a celebration for all owners of the
"Sirius" model as they prepare to celebrate the manufacture
of the 1,000th instrument in the "Sirius" series.
Some top international accordionists have been
invited to perform including Elsbeth Moser (Switzerland), Friedrich
Lips, Viacheslav
Semionov (Russia), Claudio
Jacomucci, Kathleen Delaney (Italy), Aude Giuliano (France),
Lelo Nika (Sweden), Peter Soave & The Rucner String Quartet
(USA) and Hans Brehme Quartet (Italy).
The event will also include workshops, a Gala
Dinner, jam sessions, Pigini exhibition, and a "Big Surprise".
If you own a Pigini Sirius you are eligible to enter the draw for
a "Pigini Sirius N° 1001" an accordion made especially
for this event.

Orquesta Sinfónica de Acordeones Performances
- Spain
The Orquesta Sinfónica de Acordeones
(directed by Mikel Bikondoa) will perform in San Sebastián
at the end of June. Their program will include Concerto No 1 in
Bb Major (Tchaikin) and Concerto in A minor, Opus 54 (Schumann).
Miren Gabirondo will be the soloist in both concertos, in the first
with the accordion and in the second on the piano. Never before
has the same soloist played such different instruments in a concert
of this magnitude.
On August 9th the orchestra will perform various
works, including a premiere of the Concerto in A minor, Opus 16
(Grieg) with pianist Arkaitz Mendoza in Zumaia (near San Sebastián).

Emanuele Rastelli Tours Venezuela

Emanuele
Rastelli gave three concerts in Venezuela last month, performing
at the Theatre of the Italian-Venezuelan Centre, at the Casa d'Italia
theatre in Maracaibo and in Barquisimeto. The tour was organized
by Dr. Francisco Jurlaro, cultural director of the Italian Embassy
in Caracas.
The concerts were well received by the public
and by the critics. Mr Pagliuca, Director of the Symphonic Orchestra
of Venezuela, expressed a desire to organize future concerts with
Rastelli as soloist accompanied by his orchestra.
Rastelli also visited the Conservatory and was
welcomed with great interest. The Director has plans to start an
accordion class and engaged him in a discussion on the possible
program for the students.

Masterclass in Grimentz - Switzerland

Accordionists Jean-Louis
Noton (France) and Peter Soave (USA) will tutor a masterclass
in Grimentz from August 24th to 30th. The course aims to make it
possible for participants to increase their knowledge of their instrument.
Subjects include chamber music, jazz, bandoneon and advanced studies
with preparation for international competitions.
The event will also include a "Discovery
Day" where participants can take part in a walking trip around
Grimentz.

Gold Coast Gala Concert - Australia
The Queensland Accordion Club held a Gala Concert
to celebrate Ozzie Mazzei's 90th birthday, last Sunday (8th June).
Tickets were sold out a week prior to the concert at the 650 seat
Albert Waterways Hall.
The concert (compeered by Maurice Horsborough),
included the Queensland Accordion Club orchestra combined with the
QAC touring orchestra, (Australia's premier accordion orchestra,
which included members from Queensland and Melbourne), who performed
"Radetsky March" and "Orpheus in the Underworld",
among others and finished with a rousing and passionate version
of "Now is the Hour".
Guest artists included Bernadette
Conlon (Melbourne) who performed selections ranging from Ricky
Martin, to Largo e Factotum (Rossini), and a specially arranged
set of variations on Happy Birthday, Julie Hertzel (Sydney) who
played Prelude and Scherzo, and her brother Joseph (Brisbane), John
Cave (Brisbane), John Carvill (Brisbane) and The Barvarian Club
Band, which included accordion, guitar, vocals and cow bells, with
hat dances and other German specialities.
The Guest of Honor, Ozzie Mazzei, performed
several duets with his son, Leo, including Triole.
The concert was ably organized by Ashley Ebsworth.

C.N.I.M.A. Training Courses - France

The C.N.I.M.A. in Larodde has organized four
accordion training courses in July and August. These courses will
cover instrumental improvement, ball, harmony and orchestra, tutored
by Domi
Emorine, Aurélien Noel, Nicolas Massoutie, under the
direction of Jacques Mornet and Nathalie Boucheix, Director of the
center. In addition a bandoneon training course will be held, tutored
by French bandoneonist William Sabatier.
The training courses will begin on July 15th

"Festival De Música & Danza"

Accordionist Iñaki Alberdi will perform at
the "Festival De Música & Danza" in Granada on June
22nd with the Ensemble 11 (chamber orchestra) and David Apellániz
(cello). The event is directed by Friedemann Breuninger. Their program
will include "Seven Words" (Gubaidulina), "Requiem"

The Lark In The Morning World Music & Dance
Celebration 2003 Lark Camp will be held from August 1st to 9th in
the Mendocino Woodlands State Park, a National Historic Landmark
built in the 1930s, nestled in 700 acres of redwood trees, ferns,
and glades along both sides of the Little North Fork of the Big
River in Northern California, near the coastal village of Mendocino.
