Jack Emblow's "Art van Damme" accordionContributed by Mike O'Regan

Jack & Tony on stageOn April 27th a capacity crowd attended the Rothley Centre to hear Jack (the Guv'nor) Emblow and Tony Compton perform some of their inimitable duo jazz pieces, organized by the Soar Valley Accordion Club. Jack played his rare "Art van Damme" Excelsior (vintage 1950s) while Tony played his Farfisa Syntaccordion. As the duo have been playing together for about 30 years, it is not surprising that they have a level of rapport which is second to none.

Their program included a wide variety of music such as "Summertime", "Crazy Rhythm", "Belle of the Ball", "Canadian Capers", "Samba de Orfeo", plus some more unusual pieces like "The Train" and "Musette for a Magpie" (specially written for Jack). This pair were even able to give a new perspective on such hackneyed pieces as "Spanish Eyes" and "Danny Boy". The evening ended with Jack and Tony signing autographs and records.

Two Brand New Accordions Stolen - Australia

Contributed by Bernadette Conlon

Two brand new Dallape Super Maestro Organtone accordions were stolen from a music store in Melbourne. The accordions were out on display and were stolen without their cases. Interestingly, the accordions were the only items stolen in a large music shop crammed full of new musical instruments from guitars, banjoes, saxophones, trumpets, drums, amplifiers, etc.

Police will be advertising the theft in "Crimestoppers" Australia wide, as they consider a good chance of recovery if the instruments are still in Australia. If you can help please email: lynbern@bigpond.com
