Stas Venglevski Premiere of Galla-Rini's Concerto
No. 2 - USA
Accordionist
Stas Venglevski
presented the world premiere of Anthony Galla-Rini's Concerto No.
2 at a concert on April 6th with the University of Wisconsin Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by David Becker.
Galla-Rini composed his first concerto in 1941.
During this time he performed on a Galanti Dominator Accordion with
multiple left hand registers. With this instrument, which did not
have free bass, he exploited all these left hand registers as if
it were a free bass giving him many octaves of left hand range.
He then wanted to write a concerto for accordion with Free bass
which resulted in his Concerto No. two composed in 1976, which took
six months to complete. Mr. Galla-Rini flew in to attend this momentous
occasion of the world premiere performance of his work.
On April 22nd, Stas Venglevski will perform
with John Simkus, jazz accordionist at the First Methodist Church
in Ashland, Oregon. For information on this concert email: theschefflers@cs.com

WOMAD in New Zealand
Twenty years ago Peter
Gabriel's vision of bringing world music to one stage resulted in
a UK festival of music, arts, and dance entitled "WOMAD".
Since then, 21 countries have hosted WOMAD and over one million
people have experienced its sights and sounds. In the 20 years since
its inception, WOMAD has visited New Zealand only twice.
From March 14th to 16th, Brooklands Park and
TSB Bowl in central New Plymouth saw the arrival of a stunning line-up
of performers from all corners of the globe. WOMAD captured the
energy of the music of 15 cultures with over 250 performers in 60
concerts over five stages.
Among the many performers there were the groups
featuring the accordion, such as "La Volee d'Castors"
(six-piece French/Canadian band), Los de Abajo (Mexico), Jewish
Brothers (New Zealand) and Don McGlashan, one of New Zealand's finest
songwriters, with DJ/bassist SJD and accordionist Tatiana
Lanchtchikova (Accordions Worldwide Office Manager).
