Accordion Co., International
Noted accordionist & composer Carmelo Pino
recently played in eight performances of a new version of the Samuel
Barber opera, "Vanessa," staged at the Kennedy Center
in Washington, DC. Soprano Kiri Te Kanawa (New Zealand) starred
in the title role of this Washington Opera production. Barber's
opera includes a prominent part for the accordion within the backstage
"banda," a chamber ensemble.
In July, Pino performed in a concert with the
National Symphony Orchestra at its summer residence, Wolf Trap,
Washington DC's National Park for Performing Arts. Leonard Slatkin
conducted and Ute Lemper was the featured international singing
star. She has been universally praised for her interpretations of
Berlin Cabaret Songs, the works of Kurt Weill, French chanson, as
well as her portrayals on Broadway and in London's West End. Her
program featured Pino on accordion in five numbers. The Washington
Post critic stated that "L'Accordeoniste" (the Edith Piaf
hit), which was her finale, "spiralled into an almost hypnotic
fervour." Maestro Slatkin called on Dr. Pino to take a
