Pakefield
International Accordion Festival Success - England
Contributed
by Gary
Blair and Heather
Smith
The Pakefield International Accordion Festival,
held at Pontins Holiday Centre, Kessingland, near Lowestoft from
September 12th to 16th was an outstanding success. The event, which
was presented by "Accordion Profile" magazine and organized by the
Co-Editor Heather
Smith was given the name "The Friendly Festival'" by 2001 attendees
and this year lived up to its name.
A
variety of workshops were held including Scottish (Gary
Blair), Jazz (Bert Santilly), Adult Beginners (Heather
Smith), Elementary Orchestra (Peter Whiteley), Intermediate
Orchestra (Brian Jenkins), Buskers (Johnny Coleclough), Vintage
Accordions (Heather Smith), "Free & Easy" Sessions (Adrienne Sharpe)
and Latin American (David Lukins).
There were trade stand displays by WEM and Electronic
Accordions, an auction organized by Frank Swindell and Johnny Coleclough
and "Songs of Praise" (organized by Adrienne Sharpe and conducted
by Brian Jenkins) was held on Sunday (15th).
Dance/Cabarets
took place each evening with performances by Giancarlo Caporilli
(sponsored by Fisart-Vignoni,
Italy), Alexander
Dmitriev (Russia), Djordje Gajic (Yugoslavia), David Lukins,
Norvic Concordia, Peter Ayers, Gary
Blair (Scotland), Johnny Coleclough, Charlie Watkins and Heather
Smith. Ballroom dance music was played by Adrienne Sharpe and
Peter Whiteley, with Gary Blair playing for Scottish dancing. A
late night "Jazz & Jam" session was led by David Lukins (England),
who was joined by Bert Santilly and Johnny Coleclough, plus other
performers.
At
the event finale, compere Heather Smith invited all the performers
and festival team onto the stage with their accordions and to the
delight of the audience, they all joined together to play "Spanish
Eyes". Amid calls for an encore, Heather shouted "Bel Viso" and
those who could play this piece stayed on the stage and joined in.
Many players then took their accordions into the Queen Victoria
lounge for a final "party night" session.
Next year's festival will be held from September
11th to 15th, 2003.

"The New Beppe Band" at the Gorni
Kramer Biennale - Italy
Contributed
by Holda
Paoletti-Kampl
Following their three consecutive victories
at the Gorni Kramer Biennale, Mirko and Luciano (who together form
the "New Beppe Band") took part in this year's event not as competitors
but as guests of honour. The performance of the accordion & sax
duo was very well received by the audience, which gave them several
ovations.
Here's an excerpt from the review by the Gazzetta
di Mantova newspaper: "Mirko on accordion and Luciano on saxophone
gave an outstanding and enthusiastically received performance of
a selection of jazz pieces by the great Gorni Kramer."
The duo played jazz arrangements for saxophone
and accordion such as "Buonanotte al Mare", "Amore Fermati", "Un
bacio a Mezzanotte" and "Domenica è Sempre Domenica". Mirko and
Luciano began playing as a duo 12 years ago, at a time when the
combination between their instruments wasn't yet common.
Their concert was appreciated also by the attending
authorities and by the daughters of Gorni Kramer, who gave the two
performers a special award.

CD Reviews
Contributed by Accordions
Worldwide CD reviewer Tania
Lukic-Marx
My policy is to review recordings where the
accordion is the main solo instrument or where the accordion is
the predominant instrument. Just recently I was going through the
large number of CD's, which have been sent to me for review. You
wouldn't believe what people send. CD's with NO accordion on it
whatsoever, or with the accordion somewhere remotely in the background,
barely existing. For example, I just came across a violin recording
where the accordion is used for 2 tracks only as accompaniment.
So please send CD's that fulfill my requirements
of the accordion being the main solo instrument or where the accordion
is the predominant instrument.
