International
Festival Concerts - Poland
Accordionist
Olexiy Suslov gave a number of successful concerts this month with
the group "S-ART" at the International Festival in Polanica Zdrój
(Poland). This is the third year that Olexiy has taken part in this
festival. Their program included some original compositions by K.
Myaskov & Jo Alex as well as pieces by Brahms & Khachaturian arranged
for the accordion.
Other performers included Wieslaw Ochman (Poland),
Brass in the Fife (Budapest) & Pedro de Guevara (Kostaryka). For

Orchestra Tours New Zealand

The Réunion Island Accordion Orchestra will
tour New Zealand from July 24th to 31st. The group, which includes
38 musicians have a repertoire of 40 pieces and will give a number
of concerts in the South Island of New Zealand, beginning in Christchurch.
There they will entertain pupils of Christchurch schools plus give
a concert at the Christchurch Teachers College of Education Auditorium.
From there the orchestra will give a concert
in Twizel on July 27th, before travelling to Dunedin to perform
a free concert at the Dunedin Art Gallery on the 28th.
Prior to visiting New Zealand the orchestra
will take part in the Accordion
Society of Australia International competition in the Bankstown
Pacific International, Bankstown, Sydney.

Master Class and Concert Series

Three consecutive days of seminars, workshops,
lectures, discussions and performances with accordionist/composer/author/philosopher
Dr. William Schimmel as moderator/curator will be held from August
23rd to 25th at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York. The event,
which is sponsored by the American Accordionists' Association (AAA)
is entitled "The Existential Accordion".
Included will be the performance of a Piaf Concerto,
performances of AAA commissioned works such as "Lamentations" (Virgil
Thompson) and "Prelude and Sarabande" (George Kleinsinger), a French
chanson set by Marni Rice; a Gainsbourg Tribute plus numerous other
interesting performances.

Modern Music Workshop in Barisciano

The second Barisciano Instrumental Course Programme
will be structured in three levels, according to the technical skills
of the participants, and will include 17 hours of classes from July
23rd to 27th. Each evening the participants will have the opportunity

Death of Two Italian Accordionists

It was with great sadness that the Italian accordion
movement received the news of the sudden death of pianist, accordionist,
conservatory teacher, composer and publisher Luigi Lombardi. Lombardi,
who was 77 years old, dedicated his whole life to music, composed
hundreds of pieces and received the SIAE gold medal for artistic
merits in 1981.
Well-known accordionist and trumpet player Learco
Gianferrari recently died in Cavriago, at the age of 63, after a
long illness. In the year 2000, this artist was included among some
of the world greatest accordionists at the "Footprint museum" of
Recoaro Terme.

Bulgarian Artist Receives Mississippi
Arts Commission Grant - USA

The Mississippi Arts Commission recently honoured
accordionist Milen Slavov with a Performing Arts Fellowship in Music
Composition from their Arts Industry Program. Accordionist/composer
Slavov will use the grant to create new works, expand and educate
audiences, and pursue collaborative efforts with other musicians.
The fellowship selection involves evaluation
by a panel made up of artists and arts professionals from outside
the state of Mississippi. This shows that the work of Slavov has
been recognized on a truly national level. For full details on the

"Arrasate Hiria" X International
Accordion Competition - Spain
The "Arrasate Hiria" X International Accordion
Competition will be held in Arrasate-Mondragón (Basque) from December
3rd to8th organized by "Hauspoz" Euskal Herriko Akordoei Elkartea,
the Town Hall of Arrasate and The County Council of Gipuzkoa. The
competition is open to soloists of any age and nationality.
The competition will consist of two rounds;
a qualifying round and a final round. The final round will consist
of a 25 to 35 minute free program, which will include one piece
from a preselected list and at least one original piece for the
accordion.
Prizes include certificates, trophies and cash.
The winner of the competition will be invited by the organizers
to give a series of concerts at the "Arrasate Hiria" Nazioarteko
XI. Akordeoi Lehiaketa (XI "Arrasate Hiria" International Accordion
Competition) plus the organizers of the Kragujevac International
Accordion Festival will invite the winner of the "Arrasate Hiria"
to take part in their festival in Yugoslavia during July 2003. Entries

"Non
Stop Quartet" Perform at Festival - Russia

The "Non Stop Quartet" took part in a recent
series of concerts in the picturesque lake, Mostrukovskie area (near
Samara). Over 240,000 people attended the concerts, which celebrated
the 29th festival of songwriters.
Their final concert followed the tradition of
being held on a special platform on water. This concert was broadcast
on Samara TV and on the Internet. "Non Stop Quartet" performed some
improvisations on well known author's songs and received popular
applause.
The quartet and Sergei Voitenko will continue
the final stages of their upcoming CD, which was recorded in concert
with the Samara Philarmonic Orchestra on May 16th, 2002. For further

Scotbox Ceilidh Band Tour Moscow -
Russia

The
Scotbox Ceilidh band (which features accordionist Paul
Chamberlain) have just returned from a two-week tour in Russia. The
group played for various events around Moscow as part of the 6th Festival
of Scottish Culture, which took place from June 25th to July 5th. The
band performed at several clubs in Moscow as well as a concert in the
Central House of Artists and an open air concert in Sokolniki Park.
Other performers from Scotland were the Merchiston
Castle School pipe band, and a group from Glasgow called "Clann an Drumma".
The Ceilidh band travelled to Lipetsk for three days as guests of the
city council there, performing three concerts. These attracted large audiences
and for many it was the first time that they had experienced Scottish
music played live. There was an amazing enthusiasm for the Scottish music
and requests have been made for the band to return.

26th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador
Folk Festival - Canada
The 26th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk
Festival will be held in Bannerman Park, downtown, St. John's from
August 2nd to 4th, presented by the St. John's Folk Arts Council.
Their mandate is to "Promote and preserve the folk arts in Newfoundland
and Labrador and throughout Canada".
Performers include accordionists Allan Ricketts,
Vince & Glen Collins, "Crowd of Bold Sharemen" (includes Fergus
O'Byrne - concertina, Jim Payne - accordion & concertina, and Graham
Wells - accordion & and vocals), "Shanneyganock" (includes accordionist
Mark Hiscock), and Nicole and Sarah Squires (violin and accordion).
The event will also include an "Accordion Session"
with Dave Penny, Stan Pickett, Art Stoyles, & Bob Rutherford who
will take turns demonstrating their unique brand of accordion playing.

Chinese Accordion Book Published

Accordionist and composer Li Yuqiu has written
numerous works such as "Tian Nu San Hua", "Beijing Opera Facial
Makeups" and "Cuzhi Fantasy", which are well known pieces in China.
His work "Changzheng - 1st Sonata" has won the "Wenhua Prize", which
is the top cultural award from the government.
Recently Li has read and revised his works and
republished his compositions in a book entitled "Li Yuqiu Accordion
Solo Fine Works". The book includes the above mentioned works plus

Lark In The Morning Music Celebration

The Lark In The Morning Music Celebration 22nd
annual Lark Camp will be held from August 2nd to 10th in California.
The 8 day camp is for people of all ages with over 75 instructors
teaching music and dance workshops from all over the world.
Tutors include Joel Bernstein (English concertina),
Evo Bluestein (cajun/zydeco button accordion), Jack Gilder (Anglo
system concertina), Miguel Govea (Tex Mex button accordion & Mexican

World Contest" which returns with a vengeance! This year it will
