14th Annual New Orleans by the Bay Festival - USA

The 14th Annual New Orleans by the Bay Festival was held in perfect weather, which encouraged over 15,000 people to attend the event at the Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, California on June 22nd and 23rd.

Performers included accordionist Jon Hammond who entertained with a 50 minute set each day with his group "Jon Hammond's Late Rent Session Men". Their program included original compositions "White Onions", Pocket Funk and Jon's tribute to the September 11th New York disaster (a medley of America The Beautiful and Get Back In The Groove) dedicated to those who were lost or suffered.

An event highlight were a group of musicians from South Africa, which included keyboardist Patrick Mthimkhulu with whom Jon plans to collaborate with in the future. He has begun plans to feature the group on his TV show in New York.

The festival, which was produced by Mick Brigden also included a variety of other entertainment, a gala Mardis Gras Parade each day, cooking demonstrations, and children's events.

National Botanical Gardens Concert - South Africa

Duo 2000 will entertain at the Witwatersrand National Botannical Gardens in Roodepoort on July 14th. Their program will include a variety of popular pieces such as "Guitarrero" (Drdla), "The Swan" (from The Carnival of the Animals - Saint-Saëns) and "Moonlight Sonata" (Beethoven). Balkanfolk 2002 - Bulgaria

Balkanfolk 2002, a practical seminar for Balkan music and dance folklore will be held from July 10th to 23rd in Pamporovo, Bulgaria. The event will include Bulgarian, Romanian and Macedonian folk dances, musical instrument workshops (including accordion) and folklore evenings.

Two accordionists will attend this event, Plamen Evtimov (Bulgaria) who is a member of the Zornitsa Ensemble in Sofia and Goran Alacki (Macedonia), who will perform a variety of Macedonian music. For details email: info@balkanfolk.com

Music Conceived as Culinary Art - Italy

Samovar"Samovar" performed at the Festa provinciale di Liberazione in Brescia on June 24th. The group, which includesDade Bonetti (accordion), Daniela Savoldi (cello), Eva Feudo Shoo (guitar) and Aldo Bicelli (percussion) offer a musical menu of specialities from unusual regions, consisting of own compositions alongside pieces belonging to a genre which is difficult to label, close to what is referred to as "World Music".

Orquesta De Cámara De Acordeones "Claroscuros" Concert - Spain

On July 4th the Orquesta De Cámara De Acordeones "Claroscuros" (directed by Angel Huidobro) performed in Ciudad Rodrigo. Their program included a variety of works such as "Ave Verum Corpus" (Mozart), "Arlesiana" (Bizet) and other works by Pachebel, Albinoni, Dvorak, Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich and Kachaturian. 14th Haapavesi Folk Festival - Finland

Karen TweedAccordionist Karen Tweed performed with Timo Alakotila at the 14th Haapavesi Folk Festival held in Haapavesi, Finland from June 27th to 30th. Karen also tutored at the festival, which aims to combine folk music with atmospheric church concerts, jazz, children's music, dance and theatre. The event included a variety of entertainment by performers from England, Ireland, Russia, Egypt, Italy, France, Basque, Estonia, Latvia, Argentina and Sweden.

Café Tortoni Concerts - Argentina

Quinteto Tipico, which includes Adrian Sanchez (bandoneon) will perform a number of concerts at the Café Tortoni in Buenos Aires this month. Their first performance will be on July 5th with further concerts on July 13th, 20th and 26th. Their program includes a variety of classical tango pieces. "Airs de Musette" en Valenciennois Festival - France

Milwaukee Summerfest - USA

Those Darn Accordions performed at the Milwaukee Summerfest in Wisconsin from July 1st to 4th. The group, which includes accordionists Paul Rogers, Patty Brady and Suzanne Garramone play a variety of music from polka to heavy metal to timeless rock 'n' roll classics.

Duo Zubitsky Perform at Val Tidone Festival - Italy

Duo Zubitsky & Mstislav RastropovichDuo Zubitsky (accordion & piano duo of Vladimir and Natalia Zubitsky) performed in the old religious "Collegio Ghislieri" (now the University of Pavia) and in Sarmato Castle (Piacenza ) during the "Val Tidone Classica" international festival, which was held from June 10th to 16th.

This festival (directed by accordionist and composer L. Bollani) included the Val Tidone piano, accordion and chamber music international competition with over 150 participants from 18 countries around the world. Further competition information will be published as soon as possible.

Free Reed Festival Final Week

The final week of the RootsWorld's 5th Annual Free Festival included performances by "AfriScania Mix" (includes accordionist Roland Gottlow), Alan and John Kelly (Ireland), the Budapest Klezmer Orchestra, Phonix (Denmark), Fri Flyt's Nordic-Balkan connection, Bratko Bibic, Woz (accordion) & Richard Marcus (digital percussion), and Bugel Koar (Breton songs).

VIII Accordion and Alexander Technique Seminar - Spain

The eighth Accordion and Alexander Technique Seminar will take place in the Basque town of San Sebastián from July 8th to 14th, organized by Acco Land. Accordionist Jean-Luc Manca will tutor an accordion course for students, professors and professionals. Bandoneonist Passes Away

Bandoneonist Dale Meyer passed away on June 22nd after a heart attack at the age of only 54. Dale led the groups "Parlando" and "Strictly Tango" and had a motorcycle accident a few years ago. His groups performed regularly in the USA with a program of popular Argentine tango tunes such as "La Cumparsita", El Choclo", Milonga de mis Amores" and La Puñalada" as well as original compositions and pieces by Astor Piazzolla such as Verano Porteño, Libertango, La murerte del Angel and Oblivion. He was a very kind and gifted musician.

A memorial was held for Dale in Golden Gate Park and his ashes will be scattered at sea on August 29th with many of his friends and musicians in attendance. There will be music played and his latest recordings will be released with the addition of Mia Jacobson singing in Argentinean dialect on the Tango compositions.

Dale's last performance was at The Cannery in San Francisco on June 16th and the above photo was taken at that concert.

Roman Theatre Concert - Italy

Giorgio DellaroleAccordionist Giorgio Dellarole will perform at the Roman Theatre in Aosta on July 6th. His program will include works by Piazzolla, Scappini and Pozzoli.

On July 11th Giorgio will perform at a concert organized by Gioventù Musicale d'Italia in Lavarone. His program for this concert will include works by Scarlatti, Pachelbel, Tschaikin, Piazzolla and Pozzoli. For further details email: giorgio.dellarole@libero.it

Sing, Swing & String Week - USA

A "Sing, Swing & String Week" will be held from July 14th to 20th at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. The event will include a workshop entitled "Piano Accordion For The Truly Motivated". All accordionists are welcome to attend and a working knowledge of music theory will be a big plus.
