International Guests at Viennese Accordion Festival - Austria

Ars HarmonikaGuy KlucevsekContributed by Dr Herbert Scheibenreif Manager of Friedrich Lips Productions

The 3rd week of the Viennese Accordion Festival has continued with performances from international guests. Since the early 80s Guy Klucevsek (USA) has been an inspiration for all accordionists who were looking for new forms of expression for their accordions. He was one of the first outside the folk scene to make use of the rhythmically complex music of the South Balkans and Jewish Klezmer music. In his concert he proved to be a magician of the unexpected, always using familiar forms in an unfamiliar way.

Quinteto AccentoPrimavera del TangoQuintetto Accento together with singer Norina Angelini combined formal discipline and personal concepts for new arrangements with technical brilliance. They enjoy looking for new horizons to extend their repertoire and play a variety of their own compositions. Primavera del Tango (Germany) have dedicated themselves to the Argentinean tango with heart and soul. Vocalist Franziska Dannheim (who joined the ensemble in 1998) "compels the audience" to follow her into the loneliness of the big city and the dark alleys of Buenos Aires, with her seductive voice.

Regis GizavoThe "Alpine Super-Fusion" with the family band "3 Falkner" and the "Clubbing-Institution" Attwenger was a folk orchestra with a somewhat different touch. Arnaud Méthivier performed with one of Madagascar's most innovative accordionists Regis Gizavo, who is rooted in the multicultural world of the East African island (with Malayan, South African, Portuguese and French influences).

After performing some jazz tunes, accordionist Alexander Shevchenko joined Elena Abolmazova (domra) to entertain with some delightful Russian folk tunes. "Ars Harmonica" played a repertoire beyond the classical conservatory programme. Pieces ranged from J.S. Bach, Ethno Folk to Piazzolla. What made their concept so appealing was their unusual arrangements and the harmony of three different types of accordion.
