CIA Winter Congress in Copenhagen

The Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes
(CIA)
recently held its 107th General Assembly in Copenhagen the site
of the 55th Coupe Mondiale World Accordion Championships from October
16th to 20th, 2002.
During this time the Executive Committee and
delegates were treated to a preview of the contest venue, which
will be primarily in the National Museum. During a concert at the
Museum, the delegates heard Geir Draugsvoll present the first performance
of the Test Piece "Circus" by Bent Lorentzen, who was in attendance
at the concert. Also in attendance was publisher Klaus Jorgensen
from Samfundet which is offering a 10,000 Danish Kroner prize for
the best performance of this work at the Coupe Mondiale.
The concert also featured the Allerod Accordeonorkester
under the direction of Peter Anders, which featured two works for
accordion orchestra and two violins. One of the violinists was Christian
Ellegaard, son of the late accordion exponent, Mogens Ellegaard.

Portland Polka Party 2002 - USA
The
Portland Polka Party 2002 will be held on April 6th at Norse Hall
in Portland Oregon. The event will include entertainment by "Polkacide",
"Samsonite & Delight-Ya" and "The PolkaDoubts".
Samsonite & Delight-Ya, which includes accordionists
Botielus & Cybele, will perform polkatized versions of rock tunes.
Special guests Steve "Cheese" Fritz & Mark "Sparkle" Spangler will
join them on guitars. "The Polkadoubts", which includes accordionists
Polkadot, Cybele, and Botielus plus Dennis Godfrey (tambura) and
Wm Leler (mandolin), will provide pre-show polkatainment while roving
through the gathering crowd.
The party will also include fun events such
as a Polka Slalom (Polka dance through a Polkalympic course), Cabbage
Passing, Biggest Hair Competition, Best Bowling Shirt Competition,
Polka Makeovers (hairdos, clothing, & accessories!), Photo-Booth
in the Alps and assorted surprises too unplanned to mention! For

Accordion Training Course - Switzerland

An Accordion Training Course will be held from
August 19th to 25th in Grimentz, Valais Region. Tutors include Jean-Louis
Noton (France) concert artist and music teacher specializing
in computer music, and Peter Soave (USA) concert artist and music
teacher.
The goal of this training course is to enable
participants to deepen, discover and to explore the possibilities
of their instrument. Tutors will cover MIDI accordion, chamber music,
bandoneon, jazz, and advanced work with preparation for international

Contemporary Bayan Performing School
Concert - Russia

On February 28th, a concert was held at the Concert
Hall of State Chapel of St. Petersburg entitled "Contemporary Bayan Performing
School" dedicated to the well known professor and People's Artist of Russia
Viacheslav
Semionov and his famous students Yuri Shishkin and Yuri Medianik.
The concert was organized by the St. Petersburg ensemble of Russian folk
instruments "Skomorokhi" and its conductor and artistic director Victor
Akulovich.
Yuri Shishkin (Rostov-on-Don) opened the concert with
Suite No.3 "Spring Pictures" from the cycle "The Year Seasons - the Seasons
of Life" (Kusiakov), followed by "Lullaby" (Agunenko). His program finished
with "Concerto for Bandoneon, Strings and Percussion" (Piazzolla) accompanied
by the "Skomorokhi" ensemble. The fresh sound of the Russian folk instruments,
balalaika and domra, gave a new listening experience to enthusiasts of
Astor Piazzolla music.
The concert continued with a performance by Yuri Medianik
of "Vocalize" (Rakhmaninov - transcription by Semionov) and two new compositions
by Semionov "Predictive Dream" and Caprice No.2. At the end of his performance
Medianik played the Sonate for Bayan (Semionov) with the orchestra "Baskariada"
accompanied by the "Skomorokhi" ensemble.
Viacheslav
Semionov then played his compositions "Initiation" (to the memory
of Astor Piazzolla), "Bulgarian Suite" and "Brahmsiana" Rhapsody for bayan
with orchestra. The final concert item was "Don Rhapsody" (Semionov) performed
by the three bayanists and the "Skomorokhi" ensemble conducted by Victor
Akulovich. The enthusiastic public showed their appreciation with a long
ovation, demanding an encore!

Owen Murray to perform in Royal
Festival Hall - England

Owen
Murray (Professor of Accordion at the Royal Academy of Music
in London) will perform the popular Sofia Gubaidulina work "Seven
Words" with cellist David Cohen and the Philharmonia Orchestra in
the Royal Festival Hall in London. This concert will be held on
March 16th and will be repeated again at The Corn Exchange in Bedford
on April 18th.
This 38 minute work was written for Gubaidulina's
friend Friedrich
Lips who premiered the work in Moscow with cellist Vladimir
Tonka. This London concert will be the fifth time Owen has performed
the work, having had two performances in Moscow, one in Wales and
two other performances in London.

Complesso Fisarmonicisti Città di Varese
Concert - Italy

The Complesso Fisarmonicisti Città di Varese orchestra
will perform at the Teatro in Castellanza, Varese Province on June 1st.
The orchestra which includes 17 accordionists will perform a varied program

Lips Tours Austria

Lips Productions
Following his chamber music concert during the
Viennese Accordion Festival, Friedrich
Lips toured Austria playing concerts and holding master classes
at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Neunkirchen, St. Paul, the
Conservatory of Klagenfurt and Hochegg. His concert program included
original works by Cholminov, Podgaits, Gubaidulina, Bronner, Berinsky,
Shenderjov and Derbenko plus transcriptions of pieces by Mozart,
Chatschaturjan, Schumann, Strauß, Schubert, Gershwin and Rossini.
Concerts were well acclaimed by the public who demanded encores!
Lips also held a workshop during the Viennese festival.
