International Accordion Symposium St. Gallen - Switzerland

The
4th
International Accordion Symposium will take place from May 8th
to 11th in St. Gallen with the motto "New music for the Accordion".
The varied program offers accordion enthusiasts, pupils and teachers
the chance to discuss different aspects, a place to experiment,
to get to know each other, and further training.
At a large sheet music and CD exhibition, attendees
will have the opportunity to see the work of over 30 music publishers
and listen to over 300 accordion CD's.
Course tutors include Hugo Noth (Germany), Max
Ruch (Switzerland), Yolanda Schibli (Switzerland), Pierre
Mussi (France) and Peter Nutt (Finland). For further details

70th Birthday Celebrations - Poland

Professor
Lech Puchnowski, creator of the Polish Accordion Movement, President
of the Polish Accordionists' Association, Vice President of the
National Council of the University Level Education in the Arts,
Head of the Accordion Chair of the Fr. Chopin Academy of Music will
celebrate his 70th birthday on March 3rd. The Senate and the President
of the Fr. Chopin Academy of Music, Professor Ryszard Zimak will
open a special ceremony in the concert hall, which will include
performances by accordion professors and students. This event will
be held to express their great esteem to Professor Puchnowski for
his services to the development of the concert accordion and to
the musical education of the young generation all over Poland.
During his pedagogical career, Professor Puchnowski
has filled the chair of many responsible positions including Head
of the accordion department in the Central Pedagogical Institute
for the Education in the Arts (1960 - 1965), Head of teachers' training
department of the Fr. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw (1974 -
1981), Vice President of the Fr. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw
(1981 - 1984) and Head of the chair of accordion at the same Academy
(1979 - 2002).
During many years of his fruitful scientific
and research work he wrote 91 items such as music manuals, books,
music arrangements, dissertations, and scientific information, 43
articles in national and foreign magazines, 59 reviews and opinions
on artistic and scientific works of other authors, 69 reports and
elaborations for the music industry, 22 prefaces to the books of
other authors, 30 syllabi for music schools of the different grades,
36 reports delivered on 36 seminars, scientific sessions and symposiums,
and has supervised 63 master theses. For further details on the

35th International Competition

The 35th International Competition for accordion,
piano, organ, guitar and synthesizer will take place at the Room
Jean Vilar in Argenteuil in two separate sessions during May and
July, 2002. Classes will be available for Juniors (aged 7 to 13),
Seniors (aged 14 and over), polkas, mazurkas, tangos, jazz, ethnic,
classical and pop for soloists, duos, trios, quartets, quintets,
sextets, octets and orchestras. Prizes include the Guy Vivier special
prize and the "Franco-Chinese prize".
The first session will be held from May 27th
to June 2nd (registrations close May 5th) and from July 22nd to

Spanish Music Concert - Austria

Duo "Anaki" which includes Spanish accordionist
Iñaki Alberdi and Indonesian pianist Ananda Sukarlan, will give
their debut in the Vienna "Schauspielhaus" on February 28th. This
concert will consist entirely of Spanish music including five world
premieres. The program will include "Three Pieces for Accordion
and Piano" (originated by Luis de Pablo's Piano Concerto No.2),
"Accentus" (Jesus Torres), "Diario" (David del Puerto), "Soinua"
(Gabriel Erkoreka) and "Monodias Españolas" with its amazingly bright
sonorities by José Evangelista.
Both musicians will also perform a solo piece.
Iñaki will show his mastery of his instrument with the difficult
"Aztarnak" (Ramon Lazkano), a piece commissioned by the Basque Association
of Accordion (Hauspoz) in 1998 and premiered by Iñaki in San Sebastian

National Accordion Convention
- Texas Style - USA

The Texas
Accordion Association will hold their National Accordion Convention
from March 7th to 10th at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Plano,
Texas. The event will include a variety of workshops on Musicality,
Orchestra, bands, dynamics, Cleveland-style polkas, Conjunto, Irish,
Jazz, transitions, fill-ins, Assembling a program, playing to the
crowd, stage musicianship, reading fake books and advanced keyboard
techniques, accordion care, speaking before an audience, and steps
to start an accordion organization.
New events this year include a Mini-lecture
series and roundtable discussions, professional speaking workshops,
two-level training for Irish music, Cleveland-style polka music
and group dynamics training (dynamics and stage musicianship). In
addition there will be button jam sessions, general jam sessions,
10-minute performance slots, mini-lectures, roundtable discussions,
dealer time, "Emergency Accordion Repair" by Accordion

North Central Area Accordion Festival
- England
The
North Central Area Accordion Championships will be held on February 9th
and10th in St. Thomas's Hall, Sutton, Craven. The event has attracted
a record number of entries with competitors from as far afield as London
and Scotland. Classes will be held for soloists, duos, trios, ensembles
and orchestras with piano accordion, chromatic accordion and/or diatonic
accordion. Entrants include many up-and-coming accordion stars of the
future such as Larysa Bodell, Richard Smith (who recently gained entry
to the Royal Academy of Music in London and will study with Professor
Owen Murray),
Dawn Stares, Heather Winrow and Justin Ryan. Members of the jury include
Scottish accordionist Mr Laurie and Raymond Bodell, NAO
President from England.
Performances will be given by Craven Accordion bands
and orchestra and the festival will include many trade stands from various

Balalaika Festival - Sweden
Accordionist Jim Vandelly attended the January
Balalaika Festival at the Foresta Hotel in Lidingo, Stockholm. Performances
were given by a variety of orchestras and ensembles from Russia,
Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. The event began with a big
welcome party at which each group or individual played as an introduction.
Jim performed "The Cossack Rides the Danube", a medley of Russian
folk songs, Yankee Doodle variations, finishing with the Swedish
National Anthem.
Jim also participated in a large festival orchestra
that performed to a capacity crowd in the Berwaldhallen Concert
Hall. Their program included Russian songs "Vetjernij zvon", "Kalinka",
"Svetet Myesyts" (Bright Moon) and "Calle Schewens Vals". The audience
was so impressed they demanded "Bright Moon" be played again as
an encore!

Television Show Celebrates 19th
Anniversary - USA
The
"Jon Hammond Television Show" celebrated its 19th anniversary on
February 2nd. It began as an alternative late night program airing
on Channel "C" of MCTV (Manhattan Cable TV), which covered industry
trade shows and live performances hosted by accordionist Jon
Hammond. The show was so popular that Mitsubishi featured 4
minute clips on the giant DiamondVision Screen in Times Square,
80 times a day for one year. Musical guests have included Art Van
Damme, Dick Contino, Tommy Gumina, Andy Warhol, Cab Calloway, Lionel
Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Cosby, Jaco Pastorius, and Sammy
Davis Jr.
The show's current format is "Music and Travel
Softnews Program" and can also be seen on the internet originating
in the studios of Manhattan Neighbourhood Network, Time/Warner System
at various times on Channels 56 and 107.
This year the show will feature the March International
Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Germany (for the 16th consecutive year!)
in association with sponsors Excelsior
Cemex, Hammond Germany and Sennheiser. Future plans include
a movie project currently in progress entitled "Late Rent...the
Movie" which is a life story of Jon Hammond. For show information

Klaus
Paier Trio Concert Tour - Germany
The Klaus Paier Trio will tour Germany from
February 27th to March 13th giving a series of concerts and workshops
in jazz and tango music. The trio which consists of Klaus Paier
(accordion), Stefan Gfrerrer (bass) and Roman Werni (drums) will
present their new CD "Movimiento" as well as some of their own works.
Concerts will be held in Kramsach (Tirol), Karlsruhe,
Sonthofen, Memmingen, Leonberg, Passau, Heidenheim, Kelkheim, Walsrode,
Herzberg am Harz, Berlin and Vienna, (Austria). The workshops will
be held on February 25th in Vienna and on February 26th and 27th
at the Landesmusikschulwerk Tirol in Kramsach. For further tour

Marco Polo Auditorium Concert - Italy
