Today Weekly News co-ordinator Christine
Adams will fly to Brisbane, Australia with the North Shore Accordion
Orchestra. The group of players, aged 10 to 16 years, will perform
concerts at the Sea World fun park and for the Queensland Accordion
Club. While there, Christine will join the group to play "Musical
Party" by well known New Zealand composer Gary
Daverne.
The Accordions
Worldwide team travels huge km every year attending and participating
in accordion events on most continents. An exception is Africa and
South America and we hope to also travel there soon. In October,
Tatiana
Lanchtchikova will attend the annual Castelfidardo
event. Later that month, Harley
Jones, Holda
Paoletti-Kampl, Kevin
Friedrich and Tatiana will attend an Accordions Worldwide Conference
in London just prior to the 2001 Coupe
Mondiale and Holda is frequently invited to attend accordion
events in various parts of Europe.
We all look forward to meeting you, where ever
in the world we may together enjoy the wonderful music and camaraderie
of accordionists.
52nd
Perth All-Scotland Accordion Festival and Fiddle Championships
- Scotland
The 52nd Perth All-Scotland
Accordion Festival and Fiddle Championships will be held on October
26th & 27th at the City Halls and Fringe Halls in Perth, organized
by Wilkies Music House in Scotland. The event will incorporate the
NAO
North and East Scotland Area Championships. Participants will compete
for the "Jimmy Shand Shield" and a Galaxy of Trophies.
A "Festival Celebrity Show" will also be held
with performances by Jack Emblow, Iain Macphail and Eddie Devine.
A "Grand Ceilidh Dance" compered by Micky Ainsworth will include
entertainment by John Carmichael and his Ceilidh Band at the Salutation
Hotel and a "Charity Scottish Country Dance" will be held at the
Lesser City Hall.
The Oscarshamns Dragspelsfestival will be held
in Oskarshamn (south east Sweden) on September 28th and 29th. Many
artists from the Frosini Society will entertain at the event including
the Lars Ek Hot Trio, Magnus Jonsson, Asa Arvidsson, Annika Andersson,
Leffes Hotband, Ronneby Superstars, Lindy Olsson, Sven Haraldsson,
Gunnar Andersson, Jorgen Sundeqvist and the Lars Karlsson Band.
In addition a number of small concerts will
be held in central parts of Oskarshamn. Proceeds from the concerts
will go towards cancer research and health care. For further information

Arrasate Hiria IX International
Accordion Competition - Spain
The Arrasate Hiria IX International Accordion
Competition will be held from December 3th to 8th in Arrasate-Mondragon
(Basque). This competition is open to soloists of any age and nationality
and the test piece will be sent to all contestants free of charge.

Annual Concertina Party- Japan

On September 9th the annual "Concertina Party
II" will be held at "Fuhmudo" (Wind Dream House), in front of Yushima-Seido,

The following day a concert including the accordion
and erhu (Chinese violin) featuring Zhang Xiaodong and Hajime Miyoshi

The Pakefield Accordion Festival will be held
from November 15th to 19th at Pontins Holiday Centre, Pakefield,
Suffolk. The festival will include celebrity evening concerts, workshops,
"Free & Easy" sessions, dancing, trade stands, auction of accordions

International Accordion Festival
in Casella - Italy

The 1st International Accordion Festival of
Casella was held on September 1st, sponsored by the Province of
Genoa and presented by Gian Luigi Cortese of the N. Paganini Conservatory
in Genoa. The festival featured three musical styles of particular
relevance for the accordion, namely classical, jazz and variety.
Musical guests included Gianluca Campi (winner of the 2000 World
Trophy in Portugal), concert accordionist Gianluca
Pica (prize-winner at the Internationa Competition held in Andorra
in 1997), jazz musician Emilio Cervetto (prize-winner at the Italian
Championships in 1960), Dominique
Emorine (winner of several international competitions) and bayanist
Roman Jbanov.
The theatre filled to its capacity was a testimony to the high level
of this concert event.
Fiesta Patronal Celebrations - Argentina
Accordionist Florencia Herrera performed at the "Villa
Fontana" for the Fiesta Patronal celebrations on September 2nd. This is
a religious festival held to honour the Virgin of Santa Rosa, which begins
with religious rituals. Florencia, who was invited by members of the "Friulana
Society", performed a variety of Italian music, tarantellas, musette waltzes
and "Zorba the Greek".
Schimmel and the Odeon Jazz Quintet
- USA
Dr William Schimmel performed a critically acclaimed
series of concerts at The New School, The Museum of Modern Art and
The Jazz Standard, all in New York. The group was founded by composer/saxophonist
Ted Nash, who built the ensemble around Schimmel's accordion. Members
include Wycliffe Gordon (trombone and tuba), Miri Ben-Ari (violin)
and Matt Davis (drums). At their debut concert, they were joined
by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis on two selections.
Their first CD "Sidewalk Meeting" on the Arabesque
label received much acclaim in The Village Voice, The Atlantic Monthly,
The Jazz Times, Downbeat Magazine's Hotbox and many others. Odeon
will appear at the Sacramento Jazz Festival in California in November.

Alexander Dmitriev Releases 6th
CD "Mosaic" - Russia
Professor Alexander
Dmitriev has just released his new CD entitled "Mosaic" which
contains a variety of popular pieces and arrangements by Shalaev,
Panitsky, Kouznetsov, Tchernikov, Rebane, Joplin, Vesterinen, Piazzolla,
Jutila, Rodriges, Pihlajamaa, Vossen, Magnante, Vlasov and Dmitriev
himself. Most of these works were recorded with Vitali Dmitriev
(duets) and Elena Dmitrieva (trios).
This year Alexander
Dmitriev will celebrate his 50th birthday and in addition to
this new CD, several other transcriptions and editions will be available

Bavarian Orchestra Concert - Germany
The Bavarian Master Orchestra Musikfreunde Neuaubing-Pasing
(conducted by Elisabeth Glauber) will perform at the Stadthalle
Rendsburg in Schleswig-Holstein on September 29th. Their program
will include Elisabeth Glauber's own works. For further details

Duo
Paris Moscow performed at the annual "Jyaderup" Accordion Festival
in Jyaderup, Denmark, which was held from August 17th to 19th. The
event, which was organized by Mogens Baekgard included a variety
of musical styles by musicians from Norway, Sweden, Italy, Denmark,
France and Russia. The duo were so popular that they have been invited
to perform at next year's festival.

The second masterclass directed by Peter Soave
and Jean-Louis
Noton was held in Grimentz during August with 15 participants
from France, Spain and Italy. Peter Soave covered the acoustic accordion,
preparation for international contests and jazz improvisation and
traditional jazz. Jean-Louis Noton covered musical data processing.
Professors and pupils gave an exciting concert at the end of the
training course.

Pecan Street Festival - USA
Accordionist Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones
will perform on the Acoustic Stage at the Pecan Street Festival
in Austin, Texas on September 29th and 30th. The group will also
play at the closing concert of the festival on Sunday evening at

Friedrich
Lips' new CD entitled "Cinema" is now available. The CD's program
consists exclusively of original oeuvres for bayan written in the
late 20th century. The name "Cinema" represents a uniting idea and
implies a kaleidoscope of pictures, actions, characters and surprising
effects.
Tracks include Sergei Berinsky's "Cinema" which
was commissioned by the Accordion Association of Guipuzcoa (Spain)
and was the test piece at the international competition in Arrasate
in 1996. This piece of music is dedicated to the Italian composer
Nino Rota. Vladimir Kobekin's "Holiday for Two" was especially written
for Friedrich Lips and percussionist Mark Pekarsky. This work is
a ten minute oeuvre in G Major with tiny basic motives which develop
into the merry atmosphere of a holiday and culminate in unrestricted
happiness.
Other tracks include "Jasmin" (dedicated to
Friedrich and Svjatoslav Lips), "Nostalgia - Sonata quasi una" (Alexander
Shurbin), "Walking through Neskutschni Sad" and "Tango" (Igor Stravinsky).

The Town of Bridlington on the East Coast of
England will host their first ever Accordion
Festival from November 8th to 11th, which will include a variety
of concerts and workshops. The local council and hoteliers are preparing
for the invasion of over 800 accordionists from all over the UK
and Europe and they plan to make this the best ever accordion festival.
Some of the stars include Marcosignori, Daniele
Ravaglia, Emil Johannson and Finton Stanley plus orchestras

Judge Orders Driver with Loud Stereo
to Listen to Polka Music - USA
In Cambridge, Ohio this week, a man was sentenced
to listen to four hours of polka music by Frankie Yankovic for driving
with his windows rolled down and his truck's stereo blaring loud
music. Judge John Nicholson who found him guilty of disorderly conduct,
told the accused, that he had the choice of paying a US$100 fine
or listening to the polka tunes - he chose the music!!!!! The judge
said, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. You
may enjoy listening to your music, but many people do not want to
hear your music".
The accused listened to the full four hours
of the judges favourite Yankovic's hits, which included "Blue Skirt
Waltz," "Who Stole the Kishka" and "Too Fat Polka".
