Contributed by Romano Viazzani The London Accordion Festival will be held on December 8th and 9th in Wembley, London. The event will include two Gala Concerts featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra accompanying various accordionists playing everything from newly commissioned works to Piazzolla and soloists Vladimir Zubitsky, Gervasio Marcosignori and Simone Zanchini with Hallo Mr Sax (a 12-piece saxophone ensemble with percussion). "Jazz After Hours" will follow the two gala concerts with Jack Emblow and Frank Marocco. Other events include daytime mini concerts, an afternoon Tea Dance, Trade Fair, competitions for players and composers, masterclasses and workshops. Performers include Romano Viazzani, Owen Murray, Frederic Deschamps, Corrado Medioli, Gary Blair, David Lukins, David Farmer, Jean Pierre Goncalves Lima, Veli Kujala, Susanne Kohler, Mauro Carra, Vincenzo Abbracciante, Djordje Gajic, Jerome Richard, Marielle Roy, KODA, The Czardas Duo, The High Society Dance Orchestra and students of the Royal Academy of Music. This time she performed at an event in Feldkirchen that was organised by the Association for the care of blind and visually impaired children. For a number of years, this virtuoso musician has shown how much fun one can have with the old "ship's piano" and she has developed her very own style when playing it. |
The Suolahti Music Course will take place in Suolahti from June 11th to 21st with famous teachers of a variety of different instruments tutoring students for 11 days. Accordion tutors include famous soloists Mika Väyrynen and Vladimir Dolgopolov as well as Michael Sanderling (cello) and Araijk Resjan (violin). The NSW Division of the Accordion Society of Australia will hold their State Championships at the St. George Leagues Club in Kogarah on April 29th. Accordionists Paula Harris, Milica Obradovic and David Stannizo will compete for the State title. Argentinean accordionist "Amadeo" is currently performing in a play in Buenos Aires entitled "Coco de Paris", which is about the life of Coco Chanell. Amadeo will play pieces such as "Sous le ciel de Paris", "Coco", "Sonata" (Stravinsky), "Lili Marlene", "La Marseillaise" and many others. Accordionists Joe Cerrito and Tony Dannon gave a concert and seminar at the recent American Accordion Musicological Society (A.A.M.S.) Accordion festival in Pennsylvania. Canadian celtic band "Mad Pudding" (which features accordionist Amy Stephen) will perform at the Harrison Memorial Hall, Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia on April 28th. This will also be the venue for the July 7th to 15th Harrison Festival of the Arts, a nine day festival of world music, theatre, dance and visual arts. Contributed by Franz Hochwimmer The Salzburger Akkordeonverein Saalfelden will celebrate their 25th anniversary from May 10th to 12th. The celebrations will begin with an exhibition of photos and videos of concert tours made by the orchestra in the "Festsaal Saalfelden" in Saalfelden. Guests Kellerer Hubert & Roman Pechmann will perform duets at this function. The following evening a concert will be given by the Klaus Paier Trio (which includes accordionist Klaus Paier, Stefan Gfrerrer on bass and drummer Roman Werni). Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The 2nd International Accordion Festival was held in March in Sauliaj organized by the Conservatory and City Hall of Siauliaj and Professor J. Markevicus. Many guests took part in the event including the Duo Zubitsky, Quintetto "Concertino" and Duo Gabnis/Savkov. Following this event the 3rd International Accordion Competition was held in Riga Stato, Latvia on March 23rd and 24th. Over 30 participants from juniors to 15 years old took part in the event with the following winners: Nikolaj Mohnatkin (Russia), Irina Serotiuk (Ukraine) and Alexej Masliaov (Latvia). Jury members included Raimondas Sviazkevicius, Vladimir Zubitsky (Italy), J. P. Kuusela (Finland), J. Rizov (Latvia) and O. Bloh (Russia). The competition and festival began in the famous concert hall "Ave Sol" in Riga, and continued in other cities of the republic. |
The Washington Balalaika Society will present its 2001 Spring Concerts on May 12th at the Ernst Cultural Center, Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia and 13th at the Parilla Performing Arts Center, Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland. Scottish group Burach (which includes accordionist Sandy Brechin) will tour Russia from April 19th to 24th performing concerts in Moscow. Their program will include "Deep Blue Sea" (a new piece written by bass player Roy Waterston) as well as "Sweet Thing". The trip, which has been organised by Vitaly Moronov, President of the Moscow Caledonian Club, will include 19 musicians from Scotland performing a "Scottish Music Festival" in Moscow. French accordionist Guy Vivier has just composed 30 pieces of French musette music. Guy plans to publish this material as soon as possible, but he is also busy working on three other projects: poetry, a novel and humour. The successful 16th Illawarra Folk Festival was held at Jamberoo from March 14th to 18th presented by the Illawarra Folk Club Inc. The festival saw over 4,000 people who enjoyed performances by over 260 performers and over 130 events. Canadian celtic funk band "Mad Pudding" performed at the festival as part of their current tour of Australia. Prior to this event they played at the Port Fairy Folk Festival in Port Fairy, Victoria. Plans are already underway for the 17th Illawarra Folk Festival which will be held from September 12th to 16th. Highlights for this festival include a special St. Patrick's Day concert, a World Dance Fiesta and a Minnamurra Rainforest concert. Performer applications close on April 30th, 2001. The Klaus Paier Trio held concerts in Leopoldshafen and Leverkusen (Germany) earlier this month. The North Shore Accordion Orchestra (conducted by Lionel Reekie) entertained the Glenfield Evergreen's Club at the Glenfield Baptist Church, Auckland on April 10th. The enthusiastic audience enjoyed a program of modern pieces and old favourites by soloists and the orchestra. |
