Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl Every spring the "Lietuvos Muziku Remimo Fondas" (Lithuanian foundation of supporting musicians) and the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture organize the "Sugrizimai" festival for young musicians who are studying abroad. The event is for almost every classical instrument (mostly piano, violin, cello, clarinet etc). This year (for the first time) accordionist Raimondas Sviackevicius will perform at the festival. Raimondas' April 29th recital (held at the Vilnius Town Hall) will include solo works by Ganzer, Gubaidulina, Precz and the Lithuanian premiere of a work by well known contemporary composer Nomeda Valanciute entitled "Atsisveikinimas su ginklais" (Farewell with Weapons), which was written especially for Raimondas. He will also perform chamber music works for accordion and cello with Roma Jaraminaite (cellist with the Lithuanian National Opera & ballet orchestra). The LMRF organization and the Lithuanian Government held a recent concert to honor winners of international competitions at the Lithuanian President's Hall. The President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, personally congratulated Raimondas and gave an official message of thanks to other winners. Other notaries attending the winners concert included Prime Minister Rolandas Paksas, President of Seym Arturas Paulauskas and various ministers. The event was broadcast by national TV. |

Duo "Paris-Moscow" (which includes Roman Jbanov and Domi Emorine) have just returned from the 10th International Accordion Festival organized by Francisco Saboia in the South of Portugal. Festival concerts were organized in different cities throughout the country such as Castro Verde, Loulé and Tavira. Other performers included Emanuele Rastelli (Italy), Hilda Maria (Portugal), Joao Frade (Portugal), Daniel Rato (Sweden) and Nelson Conceiçao (Portugal). To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival, Francisco presented the duo with an illustrated book on the last 10 years of the festival. Contributed by Nello Gabrielloni, Cemex The "Accordion Story" trio (Lucanero, Patarini & Lorenzetti) held a recent concert at the Konserthuset in Stockholm to an enthusiastic audience of over 1,600. This famous hall is also the venue where Nobel Prizes are awarded. The audience included personalities such as the Italian Ambassador and ministers of the Swedish government, as well as several members of the Swedish Accordion Association. The trio gave a splendid concert followed by several encores. Part of the concert success must be credited to the Istituto per il Commercio Estero (ICE - Institute of Commerce in Foreign Countries) in Stockholm, directed by Alessio Ponz de Leon, and to its counterpart in Ancona, Italy. |
Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl Accordionist Jon Hammond performed on the Excelsior stand for the duration of the recent Frankfurt Music Fair. Jon also was a special guest performer at a concert in the Galleria on March 10th, playing with Lee Oskar (harmonica), Erik Hargrove (drums), Kevin Mauder (saxophone) and Tyrone Starks (trombone). While at the fair Jon met up with Accordions Worldwide Europe Office Manager Holda Paoletti-Kampl. In addition to playing at the fair, Jon and his group also performed shows in nearby Jazzkeller Hofheim. Their program included "Moanin'" (Bobby Timmons), "Get Back In The Groove" and "Head-Phone" (Hammond). Jon also celebrated his 15 year Jubilee Party while in Germany with prominent guests from the Musikmesse including Marco Galeazzi, Donatella Milella, the entire Excelsior Cemex Team, Peter Shearer (Accordion-o-rama in New York, USA) and many other musicians. Jon has now returned to New York (USA) to celebrate his birthday, but prior to that celebration Jon played for the Mayor of Emeryville, California, Nora Davis with Marc Baum (saxophone) and Paul Smith (drums). The Mayor was so impressed with the performance that she has booked Jon to play for the opening of the new City Hall in June! |
Contributed by Toru Katou Accordionist Hajime Anzai will take part in a stage show entitled "A Miracle Singer, Ms Hamako Watanabe" at Land-mark Hall, Yokohama. Hajime will play the role of an accordionist who accompanies vocalist Hamako when she visits a Philippine prison where Japanese POWs were kept. The show begins on March 28th. Contributed by Viatcheslav Semionov The 6th All Russia Competition took place from February 19th to March 4th in Tver, Russia. The event was for performers of folk-instruments included the bayan and accordion and was held in three rounds. The third and final round included a performance by the National Russian orchestra named after Osipov. The competition was so close that the jury awarded a first equal prize to Evgeni Petrov and Stanislav Malishev(both students of Professor Semionov). Third prize went to Igor Piskariov (Moscow) and Andrei Sochilkin was awarded a Diploma. |
Contributed by Hillebrand van der Veen The Amsterdam Accordion Club Forzando A-Orchestra (conducted by Piet Verzijde) will perform at the Muziekschool Alphen in Rijn, Burg on April 6th. Guest orchestra Alphen Opus 1 will also play at the event. The next day, the A-Orchestra will play at "Esmeralda" in Schoter Scholengemeenschap, Haarlem Noord. On March 14th Kristina, Stephanie and Olivia Panzic entertained disabled children and their families from all over the Auckland region at "Uncle Eric's" annual picnic at Long Bay. The girls wandered around playing to various groups of people while they were queuing for rides and activities. The music had quite a calming effect on some of the disabled. Other accordionists performing at the event were Silvio De Pra and Alex Selman. Kristina, Stephanie and Alex are all members of the North Shore Accordion Orchestra. The Panzic family have a recent new addition to their family - a kitten they have named "Titano" after their beloved instruments! (see photo) |

Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The 48th birthday of Ukrainian accordionist and composer Vladimir Zubitsky was celebrated on March 2nd at the "Teacher's Palace" in Kiev with a concert featuring the "Kiev Camerata" orchestra (conducted by Valerij Matiukhin). The program included two of Zubitsky's compositions; his third symphony, dedicated to the memory of B. Lytoshinsky, and his accordion concerto entitled "Homage to Astor Piazzolla". Zubitsky recently held a series of concerts in Lithuania and Latvia with his wife Natalia Zubitsky (piano). |
Contributed by Susanna Schiavoni, City Councillor in charge of Economic Activities The Castelfidardo City Council (Italy) is always keen to support the participation of local accordion firms at the Frankfurt Music Fair. This year, however, the council chose a more direct approach by opening its own stand, in collaboration with the Music Marche consortium. Its numerous visitors received brochures regarding the companies that operate in Castelfidardo as well as the initiatives promoted by the council (chiefly the accordion competition). Visitors were also given the chance to sample some of the wines and foods produced in the region by a group of councillors present at the stand on March 8th. |
John Macdonald (Celtic accordion entertainer) has a busy round of Theatre and Club appearances from March through to the end of April. John will appear at over 50 venues throughout New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Shows include appearances with "The Three Irish Tenors" who have also asked John to tour with them in New Zealand later this year. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The accordion was well represented at the Royal Academy of Music's 15th International Composers Festival from March 13th to 16th in London where the theme was the music of Kagel. Academy student Li Nan (China) played Kagel's solo work "Episoden, Figuren", receiving high praise from the composer for her performance. Li Nan also played Richard Beaudoin's "Dzisiaj Angeulis Mazourka" for accordion, piano and flute. Yao Yi (China) played Kagel's "Orchestrion-Straat" and "Tango Aleman". Owen Murray will play the accordion part in the world premiere of Per Norgaard's "Terrain Vagues" with the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican concert hall in London on April 1st. |
Contributed by Geoff Levear The Rose City Accordion Club will hold their "Camp 2001" from June 10th to 14th at the Silver Falls Conference Center in Sublimity, Oregon. The camp will include five days of great fun and music! This is the fourth time this event has been held and over 50 accordionists will participate in workshops by Joe Morelli, Joe Baccellieri and Karl Kment as well as two accordion orchestras, rehearsing and performing music arranged in six parts especially for the camp. Her program included pieces by Merciari, Deiro, Rossini, Boellman and Frosini, and was very well received by both the audience and the critics. The following day the concert was repeated at the Sud Est Hotel in Lavagna. |

American accordionist Guy Klucevsek has fallen ill and is now unable to play at this event, however organizers have asked some of the successful festival performers to play at this grand finale. Entertainers now include "Rockin´Janitor", "Dobrek Bistro", Etno Bären and Otto Lechner und die Frühaufsteher. For concert details email: gottfried.preisl@chello.at Over the last week, Polish accordionist Krzysztof Dobrek celebrated the first anniversary of his group "Dobrek Bistro" with a "breath-taking" concert that left the public overwhelmed. During their refreshing performance Dobrek entertained the audience with very subtle jokes. On Sunday, Vienna's oldest 11th century church, St. Ruprecht was the place to enjoy the classical accordion with the "New Viennese Concert Schrammeln" quartet. These four young musicians successfully introduced new elements to traditional Viennese music. This was followed by a performance by Russian bayanist Alexander Dmitriev who charmed the audience with a well chosen program of works by Strauss, Derbenko, Rossini, Gridin and others. These concerts included another very extraordinary combination of different musical styles, which has led to the great success of the festival. |
Contributed by Heather Masefield The Keltic Fiddlers Orchestra (Scotland) will tour New Zealand from March 31st to April 12th. The 40 member group (conducted by Ron Stewart) includes accordionists Dougie Cameron, Sylvia Thomson and Danny Livingstone as well as violins, cellos, double basses, piano, vocalist, dancers, a mouth organ player and drummer. The group play mostly traditional Scottish music, marches such as "Iain Macphail's Welcome to Shetland", strathspeys ("Stirling Castle"), reels ("The Eightsome Reel") and jigs ("Irish Washerwoman"). They also play Irish, Canadian and American tunes and have recently added "The Bluebell Polka" and "The 6.20 Twostep" to their repertoire as a tribute to the late Sir Jimmy Shand. Concerts will be given in Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Napier, Masterton, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill. The orchestra's most recent concert in Belfast (Northern Ireland) was recorded and released on a CD. They also recently recorded a CD, which contains some of the pieces they will perform in NZ. Karmella Tsepolenko, (founder of the festival) is a well recognised composer herself, and has created a festival of contemporary music which finds recognition on a global level. Contributed by Elisabeth Glauber The chamber music "Duo Cadenze" (which includes Iwan Jergijew - bayan and Elena Jerjijewa - violin) from Odessa, Ukraine will tour Germany in May 2001. For a number of years, this duo has been a popular and well recognised contemporary ensemble. The great virtuosity of these two professional musicians and their performance unity has caused great enthusiasm among their audiences. The duo will hold a workshop at the Munich Music School on May 26th followed by concerts from May 29th to June 8th in the Townhall Miesbach, "Bürgerhaus" in Gräfelfing and in Vienna. Accordionist Viatcheslav Semionov gave a Masterclass and solo recital on March 20th and 21st in Almetievsk (Tatarie). Semionov's student Stanislav Malishev (1st prizewinner at the recent 6th All Russia Competition in Tver) also performed at this event. Their program included works by Mushel, Piazzolla, Grieg, Lorentsen, Beloshizky and Semionov. |
Contributed by Heather Masefield On March 17th the North Shore Accordion Orchestra (conducted by Lionel Reekie) performed at the St Josephs Primary School "St Patrick's Day Fair" in Takapuna, Auckland. Following the concert, orchestra members carried the sound system and two accordions to the car, which was then locked up. Within 15 minutes, the car had been broken into and the two accordions were stolen in broad daylight! Orchestra members were still in the car park at the time and heard nothing. The stolen accordions were a Titano Emperor 140 slant bass, serial number 57480 and a Titano Virtuoso 120 bass, serial number 47290. Renzo Ruggieri has just published two books related to his activities as an accordion teacher and a jazz musician. The first of these publications includes the music from his latest CD, "Accordion Voyage", and can be obtained free of charge from Musicomania editions, email: info@musicomania.it The same publisher also released "Cinema", a medley of pieces from various film soundtracks for solo accordion/keyboards, which includes parts for a four-instruments group plus the rhythm section. Berben Editions recently released a new publication on technique for keyboard instruments which is both innovative and easy to use. The book is meant as a basic course (for 1st and 2nd year students) and will be followed by another volume within the year. |
