"Duo Zubitsky", which includes Vladimir (accordion) and Natalia (piano), will tour Latvia and Lithuania from March 14th to 24th. They will present a new program which includes pieces by Zubitsky ("Rossiniana" and "Omaggio ad Astor Piazzolla") as well as "From Fancelli to Galliano" and jazz transcription for accordion and piano. UK jazz accordionist Shane Brogan (Scotland) will tour Hong Kong for two weeks from May 26th. During the tour Shane will perform concerts in Discovery Bay, Repulse Bay, Wanchai and then Manila and Cebu in the Philippines. His program includes jazz standards and originals. Contributed by Jean-Marie Giltaire The 16th Stage International de Musique acoustique workshops will be held from April 2nd to 7th at the Institut de la Sainte Famille, Virton. A variety of vocal, dance and instrument workshops will be held including accordion. Tutor Filippo Gambetta will cover individual and group exercises, an introduction to Italian, Irish and Balkan music, technical and artistic work and improvisation. Accordionist Guy Klucevsek appeared on Roulette TV (Manhattan Cable channel 56) on February 16th. The show host and interviewer was accordionist Phoebe Legere. Guy played pieces from "Squeezeplay" including "Inside Score", "Three Portables" and "The Heart of the Andes". |
Contributed by Dr Herbert Scheibenreif Manager of Friedrich Lips Productions On February 17th an exciting concert was held in the "Konzerthaus" Concert Hall in Vienna. Bandoneonist Luis di Matteo (Uruguay) teamed up with the "Neue Wiener Concertschrammeln" (Austria) to present music from their respective countries. Luis also played his own compositions such as "Escribio para Los Angeles". The "Neue Wiener Concertschrammeln" which includes Peter Uhler and Clemens Fabry (violin), Günter Haumer (accordion) and Peter Havlicek (guitar) played music from the 19th century (as played originally by the Schrammel quartet, formed by the Schrammel brothers) and new pieces written by modern composers. The concert was well received by the public. |
Duo 2000 performed a sell out Valentine's Day concert (February 14th) at Roodepoort City Theatre, together with co-artists Dana and Anne De Waal, (tenor and pianist) and Heather MacLean (soprano). Their program included Glow Worm Idyll (Lincke), Amore Scusami (Mescoli) and Wedding March (Mendelssohn). |
Contributed by Kimmo Mattila The 1st International Lasse Pihlajamaa Competition for virtuoso accordionists will be held from September 18th to 22nd in Ikaalinen and Tampere (Finland). The Artistic Director of the competition is Matti Rantanen (Head of the Accordion Class in the Sibelius Academy), the Executive Director Kimmo Mattila (Director of the Finnish Accordion Institute, Ikaalinen) and the Patron is Lasse Pihlajamaa. The competition will consist of three rounds, with test music now available. Prizes totalling 15,500 EURO and other special prizes will be awarded. Contributed by Marc-Oliver Brehm On March 10th the Handharmonika-Spielring Stuttgart-Möhringen will present a special concert entitled "Musik Im Blut" (Music in the Blood) at the "Festsaal Bethanien" in Stuttgart-Möhringen (directed by Heidrun Cargnelli and Andrej Baumgard). The event will celebrate the first anniversary of the death of the club's conductor for many years, Heinz Oettinger. After having served as a conductor for 20 years in Möhringen, Heinz concluded his active career in 1993. The concert is organized in co-operation with the 1st Handharmonika-Club "Solitude" 1932 e.V. orchestra, from his birth town Stuttgart-Weilimdorf. The program shows how varied Heinz's work has been, from classic original music, such as "Werziade" or "Romanze" (Fritz Dobler) to the Operetta-Potpourri "Fortissimo" and works by Johann Strauss (Tick-Tack-Polka, Annen-Polka and Finale 2 Act from the Operetta "Die Fledermaus"). Contributed by Norman Seaton and Sam Gentry Accordionist Leroy Bates passed away recently, survived by his wife "Poodle". Sam Gentry first met the couple at the 1992 Texas Accordion Association Convention, where Leroy played a beautifully decorated Czech diatonic accordion. He enjoyed performing Czech waltzes and polkas as well as "Country & Western" tunes. Leroy (and his wife) often attended conventions and he was always keen to join in an impromptu performance. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl Jean-Louis Noton has just finished a tour of Madagascar and Reunion Island, performing with Madagscan singer Edgar Ravahata for the international Madagascan TV station, with great success. . The tour included a week long workshop on tuning, theory and practice of bellows instruments and musical theory conducted by Jean-Louis, Philippe Humbert, Pierrot Cassé and Sergio Petronio (teacher in the Roman region), at the Albert Camus Cultural Center in Tananarive. This was followed by a week long Master Class with the participation of Professor Patricia Hivert (Lyon Conservatory at the St Denis Conservatory in St Denis). |
On February 16th, accordionist Tony FitzGerald played at a "Barn Dance" in Christchurch with his band "Shannon". The group performed a selection of ballads and popular songs such as Black Velvet Band, Wild Rover and Maggie. The band is interested in starting up slow jams - playing jigs and reels in a way that gives newcomers the chance to get the experience of learning to play. Their program will include works by Ortiz, Cima, Corelli, J.S. Bach, Bellugi-Battiston and Bartók. The following day, Ivano will hold a workshop in Sacramento. Contributed by Sue and Ron Bennett "KoolAccords" held their first accordion Ceilidh in Sussex on February 11th with guest accordionist Gary Blair (Scotland). The event was arranged to raise much needed funds for the local church, St Andrews Burgess Hill and due to overwhelming local support for this "Ceilidh Family Fun Evening" UK£350.00 was raised. Over 120 people enjoyed the chance to try the dance moves with the help of Gary's clear and often humorous descriptive calling.. The following day Gary performed to a full house at the Uxbridge Accordion Club with Victoria Molnar. |
Accordionist Jon Hammond will perform with drummer Erik Hargrove (official drummer for James Brown, well known USA musician) in Jazzkeller Hofheim, Frankfurt for the 15th Jubilee Party on March 9th. Also joining the group "Jon Hammond's Late Rent Session Men" will be an international lineup of musicians, including Christian Munchinger (tenor sax from Switzerland), Oliver Groenewald (trumpet - Germany) and Robert Hutya (electric piano - from the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg). Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl Stefan Hussong (Germany), gave the first in a series of recitals on February 15th at the "Teatro Laboratorio San Leonardo" in Bologna. The demanding programme included transcriptions of Bach, Frescobaldi, Padre Soler, Albéniz and Stravinsky, as well as original compositions by Luciano Berio, Sofia Gubaidulina, Toshio Hosokawa and Adriana Hölsky. In his career to date Hussong has recorded nineteen albums. |

Accordion Dreams is an exciting journey into the heart and soul of conjunto music. The documentary explores the historical and cultural impact that accordion based conjunto music has had while revealing how a younger generation of squeezebox trailblazers are keeping the music alive. The 7th International Accordion Competition "Casarza Ligure" for accordion, keyboard, organ, guitar, wind and stringed instruments will be held from June 2nd to 9th in Casarza Ligure, Genoa. The event is organized by the Casarza Ligure C.D.M.I. (Italian Centre for Music Teaching) in cooperation with the town of Ancona C.D.M.I., Liguria Region, Genoa Province, Petronio Valley Council, Pro Loco and the Casarza Ligure Town Council. Classes are available for classical and folk accordionists in a variety of age groups. A final Gala concert will be held on June 9th with performances by competitors and presentation of awards. Contributed by Jon Hammond Accordionist and teacher Donald "Don" Haas passed away on February 12th after being recently diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. A benefit concert was held for Don in Berkeley, California on February 4th, which was recorded as Don was too weak to attend the event. Don had performed and recorded with acclaimed musicians such as Benny Goodman, Willie Nelson, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., The Hi-Lo's and others. A service was held in San Mateo, California on February 16th. The following day a tribute and celebration of Don's life was held at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Miramar. Don's friends and union members were invited to bring their instruments for performing and dancing. An obituary is now online at Memorials. |
