Contributed by Estibalitz Jaka The IX Certamen Internacional de Acordeón "Cantabria" was held in Torrelavega, Cantabria from November 24th to 26th organized by the Cultural and Accordionists Association of Torrelavega. The event included over 200 participants competing in a variety of categories for soloists, duos and groups. The jury consisted of Alexander Dmitriev, Oleg Sharov, Jacques Mornet, Nathalie Boucheix, Enrique Telleria, Angel Huidobro, Anne Landa and Salvador Parada. Entertainment was provided by the duo of Angel Huidobro (accordion) and Rosa María Simón (cello), Nathalie Boucheix and Enrique Telleria (bandoneon), who played a variety of tangos. "Tango for Four", which includes Mika Väyrynen
(accordion), Jaakko Kuusisto (violin), Kalle Elkomaa (piano) and Jaan
Wessman (bass) were invited to perform at the President's Palace in Helsinki
on December 6th to celebrate Independence Day in Finland. In attendance
was the President of Finland Mrs Tarja Halonen (who organized the reception),
and invited guests such as diplomatic personalities, government officials,
celebrities from arts and sports, church representatives etc. The event
was broadcast live on television and the Internet. The quartet performed a 2 hour program which included tangos by Finnish composers Kärki, Virta and Rantala, and pieces by Piazzolla. Mika believes this may have been the first time in Finland´s history, that accordion was presented in The President's Palace. |
Contributed by Hillebrand Van der Veen On December 11th the Amsterdam Accordion Club Forzando B Orchestra (conducted by Marian van Vloten) will entertain at a home for the elderly in De Klinker, Amsterdam. Their special Christmas program will include a variety of popular songs such as Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels and Ding Dong Merrily on High, all arranged by conductor and teacher Piet Verzijde. Chairman of the Amsterdam club, Hillebrand will act as Father Christmas, announcing pieces and encouraging the audience to get involved. The orchestra will also provide little booklets with song lyrics to encourage this participation. On December 14th the orchestra will repeat this Christmas program at the E.D.D. On December 16th accordionist Guy Klucevsek will take part in a television interview by hostess and fellow accordionist Phoebe Legere on Downtown Community Television. Guy will also play selections from his music theatre work, "Squeezeplay". The program is part of a series aired by Manhattan Cable Channel 56 each Friday. Contributed by Thomas Duncan The annual International Accordion Festival will be held from March 14th to 19th 2001 at Pontin's Holiday camp, Lytham St. Annes, Blackpool, Lancashire, England. Guest performers include Peter Soave (USA), Jean Louis Noton (France), Jorgen Sundequist and Oivind Farmen (duo from Sweden), The Keith Dickson Accordion Orchestra (Scotland), David Lukins, Gordon Glenn, Janusc Zukowski, Steve Roxton, Heather Smith with her Cabaret Entertainers and many other talented accordionists. The festival will include a Trade Exhibition, dancing to Roy Hendrie and his popular Broadcasting Scottish Dance Band, a variety of accordion orchestra performances, an auction of accordions and accessories and Songs of Praise with Adrienne Sharpe. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl Accordionist Giorgio Dellarole will perform klezmer concerts during December beginning on the 16th in Casale Monferrato (province of Alessandria) with the Trio Klezmer (which also includes Massimiliano Limonetti (clarinet) and Antonio Sacco (violin). On the 23rd Giorgio will play at the San Michele Church in Vercelli with the Akkordeon Ensemble from Aosta. Their program will include original pieces for accordion ensemble and transcriptions of classical pieces. On December 7th Giorgio took part in a recording for Rete St. Vincent (local TV channel). Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The International Competition and Festival of Accordion and Bayan will be held in Lougansk from April 9th to 14th, 2001. The event is organized by A. Chmykov, the Institute of Culture of Lougansk, the Philhamonic of Lougansk and the Accordion Association Unissou (France) Directed by Philippe Imbert. The competition is open to all participants born after April 15th 1980. Further competition details will be available in next weeks news. |
Contributed by Michael Bleuel The Accordion Harmonists, which includes Galina Artimowitsch, Wladimir Artimowitsch and Viktor Kedalo from Belarus, began a tour of Germany on December 2nd until the 24th. The group have already performed concerts in Saulheim (Rheinhessen) and Mainz. On the 9th they will play a celebration concert entitled "Ab und zu Bach" (from time to time Bach) in Dresden. On December 2nd accordionist Jon Hammond performed with Marc Baum (saxophone) and Andrew Eberhart (drums) at the 15 year Anniversary Gala for a computer solutions company at the Main Ballroom of the Fairmont Hotel, San Jose, California. Over 450 people enjoyed the trio's program, which included favorites like "I'll Be Home For Christmas", Mel Torme's "Christmas Song" from 1946, "Easy Living" by Robin/Granger and Jon's own composition "White Onions", which was inspired by Booker T's "Green Onions". |
The Accordeonorkest Dutmala (conducted by Karl Meermans) will perform at a Christmas concert on December 23rd in Holheide Overpelt, Belgium. The 25 member orchestra will entertain with a variety of works including "Libertango" (Piazzolla), "Morgenstimmung" (Grieg) and "Happy Christmas" (Klein). Four accordion orchestras of different ages will entertain with a varied program including "It's Christmas Again", "Jingle Bells" and works by Bach and Piazzolla. |
Contributed by Maribel Insausti The Arrasateko Akordeoi Lehiaketak Festival was held from December 4th to 8th in Arrasate-Mondragón, Basque County, Spain. The event included three different competitions: The VIII "Arrasate Hiria" International Accordion Competition, the XXI National Accordion Competition and the XIII Gipuzkoa Festival. The jury was comprised of Iñaki Alberdi (Spain), Max Bonnay (France), Friedrich Lips (Russia), Matti Rantanen (Finland), Vojin Vasovic (Yugoslavia) and Nada Vjestica (Yugoslavia). Accordionists from Russia, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Denmark, Ukraine, Macedonia, Germany, Poland and Estonia competed in the event, which was organized by "Hauspoz" Euskal Herriko Akordeoi Elkartea. Prizemoney of 850,000 pesetas (US$6,000) was awarded to winners along with trophies and certificates. 1999 competition winner Sergei Voitenko was invited to give a series of concerts at the "Arrasate Hiria" International Accordion Competition and also at Music Schools and Conservatories in nearby towns. On December 1st accordionist Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones performed in Luckenbach, Texas at an event to honor singer-songwriter Al Grierson, who drowned in a hill-country flood recently, leaving young children. The nine hour event included performances by over twenty musicians. Proceeds from this concert went to benefit Al Grierson's children aged 7 and 10 years old. |

Othmer) a special Bach concert in the Epiphanias Church in Hanover on November 26th. Their program included sonatas and chorals by Johann Sebastian Bach. The music was well received by the large audience. |
Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The city council of Calusco d'Adda (province of Bergamo) has organised a beautiful new building for the "Amici della Musica" (Friends of Music) School. This institute, which collaborates with nine cities in the provinces of Milan and Bergamo, caters for over 300 students and has prepared several orchestral groups formed by students and teachers. Available courses include two accordion classes taught by Eugenia Marini (the school's artistic director) and Antonella Legramandi. The inauguration of the new building will take place in front of the local authorities on December 17th in Via Volta 321, Calusco d'Adda, and will be followed by a concert and reception. |
UK concertina player Pam Bishop will visit New Zealand with vocalist and storyteller Graham Langley from December 10th to January 6th. While in New Zealand they will perform at the Devonport Folk Club on December 10th, finishing their tour at a storytelling event near Napier. Their program will include traditional music (English and French) as well as some tunes composed by Pam (some as solos and some as part of a storytelling piece). Pieces include "Tune for Willie Whitlam", "The Blackbird" and "All the Colours of the Rainbow". For details see Future Events |

Their repertoire included Musette, chanson, an arrangement with an oriental lute called "Oud", jazz, blues and Caribbean rhythms, which were well received by the large audience. |
A new book, "Tex-Mex Conjunto Classics for Accordion" by Gary Dahl (for Mel Bay Publishing) is now available. This book was transcribed and arranged from a sampler collection CD of 15 hits by early Tejano artists and is suitable for piano, chromatic and diatonic accordion. The major artists represented are Flaco Jimenez, Paulino Bernal, Lydia Mendoza, Santiago Jimenez Jr., Don Santiago Jimenez, Los Pavos Reales, Tony De La Rosa, Valerio Longoria, Steve Jordan, Los Pinguinos Del Norte, Juan Lopez, Fred Zimmerle & Trio San Antonio, Narcisco Martinez and Los Cenzontles.
