The 16th International festival of accordion music organized by Professor Alexander Dmitriev and the Cultural Committee of St. Petersburg was held from November 3rd to 5th. The event opened with a press conference (at a recently opened restaurant in the very heart of St. Petersburg at which over 15 journalists were invited) with Professor Alexander Dmitriev, Konstantin Ischenko, Sergej Tchirkov, Aidar Gainulin, Juri Shishkin and Alexander Vasic in attendance. Festival performances were given by Alexander Vasic (Yugoslavia), Juri Shishkin, "Ural Duo", "Moscow Duo", Aidar Gainulin, Sergej Osokin and winners of recent international competitions such as "Coupe Mondiale", "Citta di Castelfidardo" and "Citta di Lanciano". Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl A Traditional Accordion Concert by the Nufringen Accordion Club will be held on November 19th at the Wiesengrundhalle in Nufringen. The First Orchestra (conducted by Günther Stoll) will perform works such as "Rondo" (Franz Reinl), "Reisebilder vom Balkan" (Hans Boll) and a new work by Fritz Dobler entitled "Jahreszeiten" (seasons) which includes "Novembernebel" (fogs in November) and "Sonntagmorgen im Mai" (Sunday Morning in May). The Youth Orchestra will also perform "Kleines Märchenbuch" (Small Fairytale Book - Hans Hauswirth), "Jugendfest-Ouvertüre" (Youth Party Overture - Josef Sadil) and a Russian Choral work. |
The Etnikos Ensemble, a group of musicians dedicated to the study and performance of Italian popular music filtered through jazz, performed at two recent jazz festivals: "Interamnia", held in Teramo and "Suoni Mediterranei", held in Atri. The ensemble is led by guitarist Giovanni Finizii and includes important personalities of the Italian jazz scene such as Ares Tavolazzi (double bass), Renzo Ruggieri (accordion), Ada Montellanico (vocals) and Massimo Manzi (drums). Renzo Ruggieri (who also wrote some arrangements for the ensemble) received the following review from Jazz Convention's critic Carlo Costantin: "Renzo shows energy and virtuosity in a vibrant style which really captures the audience". |

Accordionist Mika Väyrynen will perform a program of works by Bartok, Gubaidulina, Kuusisto, Händel, Melartin, Tchaikovsky, Piazzolla and Kchatsaturjan with cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson in Finland this month. The duo will play in Kanneltalo, Helsinki on the 14th, in Loviisa the next day and a final concert at the "Lux Musicae" festival in Siuntio on the 18th. Contributed by Hillebrand van der Veen The Forzando Light Orchestra performed two well received concerts for the elderly in De Keern, Landsmeer on November 5th and for the mentally disabled in Westerkoog, Zaandam on the 8th. The orchestra, which consists of accordionists, keyboard, synthesizer, french horn, clarinet, saxophone and percussion played a variety of popular songs like "Que Sera, Sera", and "What a Wonderful World". |
Contributed by Peter Stanchev Bulgarian accordion teacher Mihail Mihailov passed away on October 28th aged 75. Mihail, a former student of the "Misho" French College in Plovdiv, was believed to be the oldest accordion teacher in Bulgaria. At the beginning of the communist terror in Bulgaria, Mihail was forced to leave his home and forbidden to teach for a 10-year period. He settled down in a small mountain village and worked for a living as a docker, driver and car-repairer. After the teaching ban was removed, he returned to his favourite instrument, the accordion. Mihail has taught over 300 students, who will never forget him. Coincidentally, at the very moment that Mihail died in Bulgaria his student, Ventsislav Kolev (13 years old) was playing at the Coupe Mondiale 2000 in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia. Australian accordionist Bernadette Conlon has had her concert at the Methodist Ladies' College in Kew, rescheduled to November 13th. Bernadette will begin with a performance on the acoustic accordion, then demonstrate the MIDI accordion by playing a range of pieces from classical through to pop and rock 'n' roll. Bernadette recently performed successful concerts for the elderly in Brunswick, at a charity evening for the Rotary Club of Richmond, at Melbourne University and at the Lygon Street Festa (Melbourne) with a group of opera singers. Over 300,000 people attend this festival each year! |
Polka Casserole (which includes vocalist & accordionist "Big Lou") will appear on West Coast Live on November 11th. West Coast Live is a syndicated radio show that airs on over 50 US stations nationwide. The show will be recorded in front of a live audience at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The group will perform "Norman", "El Chango Negro", and "Hotsy Totsy Girl" (all tracks from their self titled album). The following day the group will perform at Schroeder's Restaurant in San Francisco. Polka Casserole is a 5-piece band, which includes bass, drums, trombone, accordion, saxophone and clarinet, dedicated to the proposition that polka is rock music in 2/4 time! Accordionists Bill & Kath Worsfold performed at the Glistening Waters Storytelling Festival in Masterton recently. The duo's program included a song called "Russian Jack", which is about the last of the swagmen in New Zealand, who was still walking the roads of Manuwatu and Wairarapa well into the 1960's. Ironically, when they arrived at the venue they were to play right beside a statue of Russian Jack himself! Bill & Kath also played a family show at the festival, a concert of NZ songs for the "Portrait of New Zealand" series, and backing for a performance by storyteller, Tanya Batt. Guest performers were present from the United States, Ireland and Australia. |

Popular group "Swap" which includes accordionist Karen Tweed will tour Japan from November 15th to 26th. The quartet will play concerts in Tenri, Hyogo Takarazuka, Hyogo Kobe, Mie Matsusaka, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya with a final concert entitled "Tribute To The Love Generation" in Tokyo.
