Contributed by Kevin Friedrich International delegates and guests were treated to 4 days of intense competition and outstanding concerts as 52 contestants from around the world competed in Kragujevac this past week at the annual Coupe Mondiale. The Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) competitions were in four categories with contestants competing in the Coupe Mondiale World Accordion Championships, the Junior Coupe Mondiale, the Virtuoso Entertainment and Junior Virtuoso Entertainment divisions. While the festival was a fantastic success, it did present its technical challenges, as contest organizers had to deal with things beyond their control. Enjoying a rebirth of their country after years of sanctions, things such as electricity and gasoline are still at a premium, making periodic blackouts around the city a necessity. Several times performers and competitors continued on as the auditorium was plunged into complete darkness. In the big picture of such an exciting international gathering of accordionists and the tremendous hospitality of the warm and friendly Serbian people, it was only a small detail, and everyone agreed that the music sounded just as beautiful in the dark! Results from the 4 competitions were as follows: Coupe Mondiale, World Accordion Championships
Junior Coupe Mondiale
Virtuoso Entertainment
Junior Virtuoso Entertainment
A special thank you to the festival organizer Milan Tomic for all his dedication and hard work, which resulted in a highly successful event. For a complete festival review and information on the 2001 Coupe Mondiale in London, please visit the CIA website at www.accordions.com/cia |
