Contributed by Jürgen Eichendorf The 4th Bandoneon Festival, organized by the Krefeld Office for Cultural Affairs, will take place in the Cultural Centre "Fabrik Heeder", from October 21st to November 10th featuring South American tango music. Events include a photo exhibition by Cologne photographer Simone Szymanski, a free lesson by the "La Cumparasita" Tango School and a variety of concerts. Performers include "Trio Pantango" (with Guillermo Destaillats - bandoneon), who will play tango dance music, "Tipica Veritango Sextet" (with bandoneon player Alfredo Marcucci) performing "Epoqua de Oro" - Tango Argentino music with its strong rhythm and warm melancholic sound, "Quinteto Locura Tanguera" (Rotterdam Conservatory) playing Astor Piazzolla works and who also intertwine elements from jazz and classical music with new compositions. This group won the "Erasmus Jazz Award 1999". On the final day the "Grupo Porteno" quartet (headed by Argentinean bandoneon player Miguel Fernandez) will play original music from the 1920's, traditional milongas and waltzes: with lots of rhythm and feeling. Contributed by Faithe Deffner, President of the American Accordionists' Association The All-Magnante concert took place at the World of Accordions Museum in Duluth, Minnesota recently, featuring guest artist Thomas Bruno of Pennsylvania performing original solo compositions, followed by the Accordion Concertina Music Ensemble of Duluth performing arranged works. Members of the Ensemble are Carolyn Carver (violin), Lynda Griffith, Gary Harvell, and Helmi Harrington (accordionists). This ensemble performed at the AAA festival in July this year, followed by concerts in Washington D.C., Ironworld USA, and several Minnesota locales. They are scheduled for concerts and workshops in Texas in November. The All-Magnante invitational concert (for volunteers and special friends of AWAM) included Charles Robert Harrington and Hanni Harrington Van Zandt, the Museum founder's son and daughter, who continue their mother and grandmother's accordion studio operation in Austin, Texas. |
Contributed by Vladimir Zubitsky The 6th Montese Accordion Competition and Festival was held in Montese, Modena Province during September. Forty five participants (from 6 to 70 years) from Italy, Slovenia and the Ukraine took part in this popular festival. The jury included Vladimir Zubitsky (President), Giuliano Leone, Marco Fabbri, Silvia Pagni, Lorenzo Munari and Isaak Comandini. Results:

The 3rd Namur Accordion Festival will be held in the "Baie Vitrée" celebration room in Floreffe Abbey, Namur on October 15th. The event is organized by the Company for the Promotion of Talents of Young Artists (S.P.T.J.A.), under the patronage of the Belgian French speaking Radio & Television station (RTBF). Contributed by Gary Dahl The San Francisco Conservatory of Music first concert of the season will be presented by the Conservatory's New Music Ensemble (conducted by Nicole Paiement) on October 13th. The following day the concert program will be repeated at the Church of St. Gregory Nyssen, in San Francisco. Both performances are free! This is a special concert to support Leesa Dahl, a classical accordionist who will also be receiving her masters of music degree in piano performance in May, 2001. The group will, play the rarely performed Hindemith work, Kammermusik #1 op. 24. Leesa will play a Francini accordion on loan from Bruce Metras of San Rafael. For further details see Future Events. |
A duo of Heinrich Biegenzahn (playing accordion, clarinet and saxophone) and pianist Zsuzsa Varga will perform at the Kultur Mittag event in the Altes Rathaus, Barocksaal in Vienna on October 18th and 19th. Contributed by Vladimir Zubitsky The 3rd "Gorni Kramer" International Accordion Festival (named after Gorni Kramer, famous Italian jazz accordionist, composer and conductor) was held on September 23rd and 24th in Poggio Rusco, Mantova Province. Many classical, jazz and folk accordionists enjoyed the opportunity to meet each other, listen to festival concerts, take part in the International competition and to try new models of instruments exhibited by Italian factories. Over 60 participants from central Europe took part in the competition, which included four categories, Classical (standard bass and free bass), Variety and Jazz. The International jury included Gervasio Marcosignori (President), Vladimir Zubitsky (Ukraine), Simone Zanchini (Italy), Emanuele Rastelli (San Marino), Carmine Di Marco, Sylvia Pagni (Italy) and Cellino Bratti (France). Jazz and classical concerts were given by guest soloists and ensembles from different countries. The next festival will be held in 2002. |
Two accordion workshops directed by Frédéric Deschamps took place from September 21st to 25th and from October 5th to 9th at the Conservatoire de Paris 9 in France. The aim of the masterclasses was to prepare students for the 50th Trophée Mondial in Portugal and the International Castelfidardo Competition. Frédéric Deschamps' students were very successful at the Trophée Mondial, winning prizes in the Variety and Junior Classical categories. All of the students will take part in the International Castelfidardo Competition from October 11th to 15th as well as the Hohner musicians' team, which includes Jérôme Richard, Xavier Rollet, Marielle Roy, Mickael Richard, Phil Bouvier, Grégory Frenard, Vincent Carenzi, Benoit Chabod, Mathilde Royet and Magali Boissier. |

A Bavarian Accordion Festival "Bayerische Akkordeontage" will be held at the Alteglofsheim Music Academy in Bavaria from October 27th to 31st. The event will include workshops on Orchestra Playing (by Stefan Hippe), Conducting (Wolfgang Pfeffer), Jazz and Swing (Kurt Maas) and Theory and Solo-playing (Elisabeth Glauber, Helmut Weinzierl and Jürgen Wunn). Øivind Farmen (Norway) and Jörgen Sundeqvist (Sweden) began a tour of Norway and Sweden on October 9th beginning in Trondheim and finishing on November 2nd. Concerts will be played in Bodø, Tromsø and Östersund. They will also give a week-end seminar during the trip. Their program includes works by G. Frescobaldi, M. de Falla, A. Pärt, E. Ettore, A. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The annual International Castelfidardo Competition is currently underway until October 15th in Castelfidardo, Italy. Competition prizes include the International "Città di Castelfidardo" Prize, International "Città di Castelfidardo" Awards for Classical Music and Light Music. Competition classes include Classical, Chamber music, Jazz and Light music for soloists, duos, trios and orchestras in a variety of age groups. The opening concert, held at the New "Astra" Theatre on October 10th included performances by "Fire's Sons" (1999 winners of the "New Generation" Competition in Castelfidardo) and "Bosio Big Band" (conducted by Ambrogio Sparagna). A variety of other concerts have been held so far with guests "Duo Modus" (Denmark), (violin), "Zap Jazz Duo" (France), "Demo Morselli Big Band Orchestra" (Italy) and Richard Galliano (France). |
Popular duo Samsonite & Delight-Ya will present their "wacky" accordion related act, "Miss Cybelvis Monroe" at the opening gala night of the 17th Annual Olympia Film Festival in the Capitol Theater in Olympia, Washington on October 20th. During the act, Botielus plays the accordion, and Cybele sings Elvis Presley songs (with a twist) in Marilyn Monroe's voice (Cybele is a professional Marilyn Monroe impersonator). Tunes include "Blue Suede Shoe-shoo-pee-doo", "Heartbreak Motel 6", and "Hound Dog" where Miss Cybelvis Monroe drapes a pink satin scarf around the neck of anyone who comes up to make barking sounds during the accordion solo. For their grand entrance at the Film Festival's Gala Opening event (which coincidentally is also Cybele's birthday) the duo will arrive at the theatre in a stretch limousine, where a red carpet will be rolled out and partitioned off from the "paparazzi" with velvet ropes! Finnish accordionist Mika Vayrynen will tour Germany from October 14th to 22nd with two members of the group "Tango for Four", Kalle Elkomaa (piano) and Jaan Wessman (bass). The trio will accompany tenor Harri Kaitila during this 10 day, seven concert tour. Concerts will be held in Berlin, Leipzig and Dusseldorf. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl On October 1st, accordionist Emanuele Rastelli helped the Republic of San Marino celebrate the seventeenth century since its foundation. The event took place during the customary change of the Regency and the State Ministry of Culture marked it with a concert held in one of the halls of Santa Chiara's Monastery (usually reserved for important painting exhibitions). The concert was attended by the Regency as well as by the most important personalities of the country, all the foreign consuls and many international guests. |

The "Scenari Paralleli" theatrical group, based at the "Teatro Centrale" in Ostia (near Rome), often asks Renzo Ruggieri to provide the music for their shows. From September 29th to October 21st the group will stage "Tra moglie e marito", an entertaining musical on the tribulations of the modern couple written by Amurri and directed by Paolo Perelli. On October 15th there will be a performance of "Doppio Legame" (by Zinna-Regoli, directed by Magnano San Lio) whose musical accompaniment is entirely played on the accordion by Renzo. From December 8th to 23rd improvisational music (with Ruggieri's "Solo Accordion Project"), dance, mime and acting will meet in an involving and original project based on Pablo Neruda's "Firesword" and directed by Paolo Perelli. This will be followed by the Renzo Ruggieri Group performing music from its latest CD of traditional jazz "Accordion Voyage" on February 1st 2001.
