Contributed by Dr Herbert Scheibenreif Manager of Friedrich Lips Productions The 3rd International Moscow Bayan competition and festival, which will be held from December 9th to 18th this year is open to musicians aged from 17 to 32 years at the time of the competition. This is one of the most important competitions in Russia and takes place every five years. The deadline for applications is September 10th and applications must be sent to: Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, International Centre of Culture, 7, Kitaigorodsky Proezd, 103693, Moscow Russia. The competition will be held in three rounds - two preliminary and the final with all three rounds open to the public. Contestants are free to play on the bayan or accordion of any type, size, model except those equipped with electronics or amplifiers. Contestants must choose their program from a list of works (available from the organizer) by composers such as Bach, Shostakovitch and Podgaitz as well as some own choice works. Accordionist Lacides Romero will perform at the "San José de Calazans" Church in Bogotá on September 10th. His program will include Sarabanda (Destouches), Primera Saltarella (Leybach) and Pizzicato (Delibes). The concert is organized by the "Fundación Música en los Templos de la Arquidióces de Bogotá". Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl Accordionist Emanuele Rastelli presented a varied program of musette, swing, tango and jazz in a concert in Cerchio (province of L'Aquila) during the 3rd "Città di Cerchio" National Competition. Rastelli was also part of the jury for the classical, traditional and free bass accordion categories. Following this he gave another solo concert in Montefiore. |
Accordionist David Farmer will perform a new work by British composer Karl Jenkins at London's Royal Albert Hall on September 28th. This new large scale work for orchestra, choir and soloists is the 4th installment of Jenkins' Adiemus series and is entitled "The Eternal Knot". Influenced heavily by Celtic folk music this newly recorded work, as well as having a substantial accordion part, also features solos from jazz guitarist Martin Taylor and Irish piper Davey Spilain. Contributed by Li Cong The annual China International Accordion Festival was held from August 10th to 14th in Beijing. The first festival was created by Jiang Jie in 1994, who is now the President of the Beijing Accordion Association. Guest performers included Russian accordionists Scliarov and Viatcheslav Semionov. Over 200 participants competed in the competition, included students from the Vladivostok Music College in Russia. The event highlight was the Adult Accordion Class with Liu Dong (student at the Tianjin Music Conservatory) winning first prize and RMB10,000. The jury were made up of Chinese and Russian accordionists. This International festival is one of the biggest accordion events in China. |
Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The VI Semaine International d'Accordéon festival was held recently in Alcobaça organized by the Ecole de Musique Serenata and Anibal Freire. Twelve successful concerts were given by international guest accordionists Duo Semionov, Alexander Dimitriev (Russia), Peter Soave (USA), Duo Paris-Moscovo (France), Ensemble Melody and Orchestre d'Accordéon d'Alcobaça. A seminar was also given by Peter Soave to enthusiastic participants. |
Popular Scottish group "Burach" will tour Norway from September 12th to 26th, performing concerts in Stavanger, Rubbestadsneset (Island of Bomlo), Fitjar, Island of Stord, Kopervik and Jondal. Their program includes "Sweet Thing" and "Knot Quite Silverstone", a set of 3 tunes: Thomson's Reel, The Formula 1 Chocolate Racer & Knot On A G-String. This is the band's 10th tour of Norway and their third trip this year. In July, they played at a festival in Floro, on the west coast of Norway, with the Dubliners and The Waterboys. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl A tribute to one of the greatest Italian accordionists of all times, Wolmer Beltrami, was recently held in Breda Cisoni (province of Mantua). Beltrami died on August 28th last year and was universally praised for his performing skills, particularly in classical music and jazz, which earned him the prestigious "World Accordion Oscar". The musical tribute was given by well-known personalities of the accordion world including Renzo Ruggieri with his group, Paolo Picchio's Milonga Quintet, Luigi Lombardi, Massimiliano Pitocco, Adolfo Del Cont, Valentino Lorenzetti, Gervasio Marcosignori and Giancarlo Caporilli. |

German group "The Zydeco Playboys" have received a positive review of their new CD "Women's only?" from Zyde.com, the Internet Magazine for Louisiana Music. The CD includes zydeco and zydeco/blues tunes such as Buckwheat Zydeco pieces "Whatcha gonna do?" and "Buck's Hot Road". The "Voglia d'Arte" Music School directed by Renzo Ruggieri (based in Roseto degli Abruzzi) concluded its activity for the 1999-2000 year recently with students Bernardo Di Bonaventura, Diego Valà, Graziano Gianforte and Moreno Gianforte taking part in an end of year concert. A few days later final exams were held, presided over by a prestigious jury (see picture) including Eugenia Marini and Marcello Malatesta. Following the exams there was a final performance by the students and a ceremony to award two scholarships to students Antonio and Luca Mancini. As usual these activities were held at the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony (Padua) and Venice. |

Duo 2000 performed for the 45th and 46th time last weekend at their regular monthly house concerts in Emmarentia, Johannesburg. Each of these concerts has been fully booked with some people attending every concert. This very successful duo is considering putting on an extra show on the Friday of each month, but currently they are already booked out with other performances! |
The Paris-Moscow Duo, which includes accordionists Roman Jbanov and Domi Emorine, will tour Denmark in October beginning with a concert at the Herning Music School on the 11th. Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The Milonga Quintet were kept busy performing tango concerts over the last month. The group, which includes Roberto Picchio (accordion), Christian Riganelli (accordion), Stefano Cappella (guitar), Maurizio Scocco (bass) and Alessandro Polenta (percussions) has a repertoire that consists of pieces by Astor Piazzolla arranged by Paolo Picchio. The quintet performed in the picturesque square in front of the famous sanctuary in Loreto, at the Monsano Folk Festival in Monsano (an important event dedicated to traditional music in Italy, which this year paid homage to Piazzolla), at the Teatro Astra in Parma, under the beautifully lit medieval castle in the square of Offagna, in Belforte del Chienti and in San Polo d'Enza (province of Reggio Emilia). |
Contributed by Henry Doktorski, The Classical Free-Reed The Piazzolla Soloists from the Czech Republic will perform a concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 14th. Group members (who teach at the Conservatory of Prague) include Ladislav Horak (accordion), Petr Paulu (guitar) and Jana Kholova (flute). Horak is a graduate of the Prague Conservatory and the University of Pilsen. He presently teaches at the Prague Conservatory and gives lessons in Germany. He is a president of the Czech Accordionist's Association and has been a member of international juries including those of the world organization CIA. Their program will include works by Astor Piazzolla, Ferdinando Carulli, Fernando Sor, Enrique Granados, Federico Moreno-Torroba, Hector Villa-Lobos, Joaqun Rodrigo and Abel Carlevaro. The Matlock Music and Dance Millennium Festival will take place from October 20th to 22nd and include concerts and workshops in a variety of musical styles including rock 'n' roll, French, Swedish and flamenco. Contributed by Li Cong The Shandong Accordion Association, Shanghai Accordion Association and Shanghai Accordion Factory organized a concert held recently in the New District Music Square in Qingdao. Over 120 students played "To the New Millennium" followed by soloists. Over 300 people attended the concert including Fuyong (President of the Shandong Accordion Association), Li Cong (President of the Shanghai Accordion Association), Zhaoshiyu (Director of the Shanghai Accordion Factory) and Professor Chenyiming (Shandong Normal University). |
Contributed by Jon Hammond Bandoneon player Dale Meyer (member of "Parlando" and "Strictly Tango") was returning home from performing at the recent Cotati Festival when he was involved in a bad motorcycle accident.
