Contributed by Joe Natoli, JANPress Publications Accordion teacher, arranger and composer Mickey Bisilia (1918-2000) passed away in his sleep recently after several years of bad health. Mickey played regularly while in the Air Corp during the war and also began arranging pieces for army big bands. After leaving the service in 1945, he returned to his hometown Youngstown and began a teaching partnership with "Tee" Ross. His students gained many first placings in the American Accordionists' Association (AAA) state and national competitions. Two of Mickey's students Joseph Natoli and Anthony Rolando each won the AAA United States Open Virtuoso Competition and represented the United States in the Coupe Mondiale Competition, gaining second and third placings. Later, Mickey performed with the Kenley Players Theatre Orchestra backing stars like Mickey Rooney, Jimmy Dean, and Bobby Vinton. He also performed with the Montovani Orchestra. Mickey created hundreds of big band and stage band arrangements for many different dance orchestras over the last 30 years. Mickey will be sadly missed, as it would be difficult to find anyone who was more selflessly dedicated to the cause of the accordion and his students as Mickey was. |
