This week we have featured a news item on a competition for composers - PanAccordion 2000 held recently in Finland. It was wonderful to see that over 65 entries were received, from fifteen countries. Contributed by Paul Pasquali The Las Vegas International Accordion Convention was an "overwhelming success" according to both Art Van Damme and Peter Soave. Attendees gave the event an "outstanding" rating and are looking forward to next year's event, which is already in the planning stages. This years festival featured guest accordionist Art Van Damme who received the Honorary Conductors Award. Art also gave a master class to over 200 people and provided a rare performance which included bass and drums and drew a standing ovation from everyone in attendance. Peter Soave and Julien Labro received a standing ovation for their performance. Peter played both the bayan and the bandoneon and also presented informative workshops and a master class. Gina & Romany Rye (England) who were the Master of Ceremonies, gave workshops and offered a well attended master class with some fun and laughs included. They also provided entertainment at the Sunday evening social and Gina took the microphone around the entire room to introduce everyone. Other performers included the Aman Family, Herbie, Gina Brannelli, Tony Lovello, Jane Christison, Steve Albini, Steve Balich, Gordon Kohl, Marian Kelly, Murl Allan Sanders and song writer Max Carl. |
Contributed by Vladimir Zubitsky The first PanAccordion 2000 competition for accordion composers was held recently in Oulu, Finland organized by Kimmo Mattila, Director of the Finnish Accordion Institute. Over 65 compositions were received from 15 countries including Argentina, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Yugoslavia, Lithuania, Spain, Italy, Poland, China, Norway, Monaco, Slovenia and Switzerland. The most popular instrumentation was accordion & string quartet. Compositions were of a very high standard with judges awarding two first equal, second equal and third equal placings! The 2nd National Accordion and Keyboard Competition took place in Broccostella in August organized by the "Amici della Musica" (Friends of music) association. Auditions took place on August 5th in Broccostella with the jury selecting 130 candidates to compete in eleven sections. Best performers included Matteo Fratarcangeli, Stefano Fiore, Claudia De Ciantis, Alessio Gizzi, Massimo Cardinali, Cristian di Battista, Antonio Simeone, Roberto Capricci, Serena Lupo, Giorgio Sarra, Franco Mirko and Roberto Marcato. The event showcased some great talents during the gala evening hosted by Fabiola Sarda which included a concert by the "Renzo Ruggieri Trio" along with performances by the winners. |
The Milwaukee Irish Festival was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from August 17th to 20th. Accordion performers included Jim and Mary Coogan who played with the ensemble "Fathers and Daughters - Music to Cherish". The annual festival, which is one of the world's largest Irish culture festivals, showcases Irish music, history, dance, drama and sports and hosts over 100,000 guests from around the world. This years events included concerts, cultural exhibits, displays, theatre, poetry readings and demonstrations. |
Accordionist Heather Hawthorn will perform at a "Back to the Forties" free charity concert in Nottingham Main Square on September 8th on behalf of Age Concern. Her program will include pieces from the 1940's including war time songs such as "Beer Barrel Polka" and "Run rabbit Run", Glenn Miller pieces like "In the Mood" and "Moonlight Serenade" and songs from films and shows of that era. Contributed by Sergej Tchirkov World famous composer Franco Donatoni (born 1927) passed away on August 18th in Milano, Italy. Donatoni was one of the most important composers of the post war period. His music has very close relations with some mathematical models; sometimes it represents so called "post-serialism". His last work entitled 'ESA' had been written with the help of some of his students, and is dedicated to Esa Pekka Salonen. Franco Donatoni composed FERIA IV for solo accordion (dedicated to Claudio Jacomucci) and FERIA III for two accordions (transcribed by Claudio Jacomucci). The second part of FERIA IV was chosen as a test piece at the Premio di Castelfidardo 1998 international competition. |

The Cennina Summer Festival 2000 took place recently in the magnificent castle of Cennina, a fortification dating back to the end of the 10th century. Guest artists included "Cameristi Toscani", "Solisten der Kammerphilarmonie Berlin Skb" (Berlin), the Hohenloher Quartet and the Trio Manaste. The trio, formed by singer Cinzia Genderian with Guido Arbonelli (clarinet) and accordionist Renzo Ruggieri, played pieces by Gershwin, Galliano, Piazzolla and Bernstein. The event also included a seminar by Guido Arbonelli, who asked Renzo Ruggieri to demonstrate his particular brand of "musica d'insieme" (ensemble music). |
The Wongawilli Band will perform a variety of Australian bush dances at a "Bush Dance" in Dapto on August 25th. The following day the band will be kept busy playing at a National Folk Week workshop as part of "Learn A Folk Instrument Day" in Wongawilli. Band members will give introductory workshops on the whistle, percussion including lagerphone and bodhran, fiddle, music arranging, accordion, piano vamping and harmonica. That evening they will play at an "Old Time Bush Dance" for the Albion Park Show Society in Albion Park. Their repertoire will also include old time music featuring traditional and collected tunes from Australian bush musicians. Band members include David De Santi (piano accordion and concertina), Graeme Murray, Reg Murray, Chloe Roweth, Jason Roweth, Jane Brownlee and Tania De Santi. Other instruments played include lagerphone (stick with bottle tops), snare drum, spoons, whistle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, violin, viola and piano. Contributed by Paul Pasquali On August 10th the prestigious Crystal Frosini Award was presented to the Texas Accordion Association (TAA). Barbara Scott (President of the San Antonio chapter) accepted the award in the absence of TAA President Norman Seaton. Fifteen clubs and accordion organizations competed in this year's award. Judges Art Van Damme, Peter Soave, Arlene Boddicker and Marian Kelly stated that the choice was difficult as several of the clubs were very close. The award is presented to the club or organization that has done the most to help promote the accordion. Norman Seaton has stated that TAA will encourage its individual chapters to run for the award next year and he encourages all clubs to compete in the awards process. US group "Klezmos" played at the Annapolis Contra Dance in Crownsville, Maryland on August 19th organized by The Annapolis Traditional Dance Society. The group includes Wendy Morrison (piano accordion, vocals), Marc Glickman (dumbek, guitar, vocals), Jonah Blaustein (clarinet, sax), Ralph Gordon (bass) and Alexander Mitchell (violin, mandolin, percussion, vocals). Klezmos played a variety of dance tune medleys for the contradance such as Sideways Glance / Ruthie's Hungarian Tune and Boulevard Garibaldi as well as klezmer tunes, music from Eastern Europe, traditional New England contradance tunes, Irish, French, and other international dance tunes. The evening was well attended with enthusiastic dancers enjoying the music and dance lessons. |
Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The concert schedule of accordionist Lorenzo Munari so far this year has included a series of successful solo performances at Teatro Afieri (Turin), Teatro Comunale Ruggeri (Guastalla, near Reggio Emilia), Sala Convegni M. Luigia (Fontevivo di Parma) and Teatro Manzoni (Reggio Emilia). Lorenzo has also been busy conducting the Fisorchestra Luigi Valcavi, an orchestra formed by the students of the Music School by the same name. Munari's future projects include an evening concert with well-known organist Giuliano Cameli and a performance at Canolo di Correggio (Reggio Emilia Province) on September 16th with famous Ukrainian accordionist Vladimir Zubitsky, who used to be his teacher. |
Contributed by John Dickson The Perth Accordion Club celebrated its second birthday on August 20th. Over 150 club members and visitors enjoyed Spanish music, which was the theme for the day. Entertainers included Peter Piccini, Nick Pepe and the Perth Accordion Orchestra who played paso dobles, waltz's, tangos and marches. |

The entire event is free to the public with workshops and performances by a number of local and national accordionists. A repair workshop is also being planned for the afternoon. Tracks include "Il dolce dolore" (Sweet Pain) by Sergej Berinsky who wrote this romantic and extremely beautiful oeuvre for cello and bayan, and "The River of Love" (Capriccio for bayan) by Vladimir Rjabov who dedicated this work to Lips. Other tracks include "Dream Garden" by Mikhail Bronner, who dedicated this piece to Vladimir Toncha and Friedrich Lips, "Russian Landscape in the Back" (Roman Ledenjov) also dedicated to Lips and "Seaworld" (poem for violin and bayan) by Sergej Berinsky. |
Duo Concertante (consisting of accordionist Carlo Plaum and saxophonist Ton Verhiel), released their CD "Just for Fun" recently. The CD contains pieces by Jean Seegers, Jean Absil, Giuseppe Sammartini, Michael Glinka, Rudolph Zwartjes, Graham Lyons, Irving Glick, Ton Verhiel and Carlo Plaum. It is a collection of compositions in a variety of styles aimed to suit the enjoyment of many people. The duo believe this may be the only CD of its kind currently on the market.
