Contributed by Per-Olof Larsson The Lisebälg 2000 Festival will be held in the Lisebälg Amusement Park in Göteborg, Sweden on August 19th. The park features different themes each weekend, with the accordion having been featured annually since 1978. Accordionists will play all over the park with concerts by guests Three Generations, The Lidqvist brothers, The Bertilsson brothers, Peter & Therese, Anders Larsson and accordionist of the year in Sweden - Annika Andersson. Any one with an accordion can enter the amusement park free of charge. At last year's accordion weekend, over 30,000 people visited the park. For further details see Future Events |
Contributed by Raimondas Sviackevicius The 6th International Summer Festival will be held at the S. Vainiunas Music School in Palanga, Lithuania from August 7th to 16th organized by the Lithuanian Accordion Association, Lithuanian Music Academy and Lithuanian Musicians Society. Festival leaders are Professor Ricardas Sviackevicius and Eduardas Gabnys. The event includes seminars, concerts, open lessons, displays of sheet music, CD's, LP's, instruments and other accordion items, and master classes with tutors from the Lithuanian Music Academy including Professor Eduardas Gabnys, Doc. Zita Abromaviciute, Professor Ricardas Sviackevicius, Genadijus Savkovas, Gintautas Smolskas, guest Professor Radjap Shaikhoutdinov (Russia) and performer and composer Professor Bogdan Dowlasz (Poland). Every day the Republic United Accordion Teachers Orchestra will perform and all musicians are welcome to take part. Concerts will be held each evening with a final gala concert on August 15th. Performers include students from the Lithuanian Music Academy, students from the Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai and Panevezys Conservatories, and a teachers orchestra with soloist Zita Martinaviciute (soprano). Contributed by Gregory Frenard The Coupe Nationale 2000 was held recently in Vincennes, France. Winners were chosen to compete in the Coupe Mondiale (including 19 students from Frédéric Deschamps' class), which will take place from October 25th to 30th in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia. Magalie Boissier, who won the 1999 Junior Coupe Mondiale, was chosen to compete in the Junior Virtuoso Entertainment Music class. Results: Concert Music Category Senior Soloists

Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl The third Festival of Italian and Argentinean Culture known as "Un ponte, due culture" (A Bridge, Two Cultures) was characterised once again by the central role of the accordion. The organisers asked Paolo Picchio to compose a series of pieces especially devoted to this event, entitled "Introducción, Cuatro Interludios y Final" for two accordions, bass and percussion. This group of pieces, based on South American rhythms, was performed twice by Christian Riganelli and Roberto Picchio (Milonga Quintet) on accordion, Maurizio Scocco (bass) and Alessandro Polenta (percussion). The concerts took place in San Giuseppe da Copertino, Osimo, Ancona on July 9th, and in the Church of Santa Maria in Portonovo, Ancona on July 22nd. Their program also included "Misa criolla" by Ariel Ramirez. |
Colombian
accordionist Lacides Romero performed a successful concert at the "Raúl
Gómez Jattin" Centro Cultural venue in Cereté on July 28th. In attendance
was the Mayor of the city who thanked Lacides and his father Tiburcio Romero
for their cultural contribution to the region. The concert was widely reviewed
by the El Meridiano newspaper and recorded by the regional TV channel Telemeridiano
who televised it on July 30th.
Lacides will perform in the "San Jose De Calazans" Church in Bogotá on September 10th. The following month he will travel to Italy to take part in the first Colombian Art Festival in Milan from October 7th to 11th. For further details email: lacidesromero@yahoo.com |

Three accordionists were interviewed and played different styles of music - Ermes Losi performed variety pieces, Vladimir Zubitsky played classical works and Carmine do Marco played the midi-accordion. The group, which includes three accordionists (Daniel Perrin, Marie Perny and Patrick Mamie), clarinet, violin, guitar, trombone, sousaphon and drums play a mix of swing, tango, gypsy and klezmer pieces as well as their own compositions. Events include workshops by Brendan Begley, John Whelan & Niall Vallely, displays, entertainment and concerts by the Karan Casey Trio (featuring Niall Vallely on concertina) and the John Whelan Band. The 9th International Stefano Bizzarri Competition was held recently in the San Salvatore Church, Morro D'oro, Teramo (organized by the Music Association "Stefano Bizzarri") with competitors from Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Russia, Serbia, Yugoslavia and USA. Lithuanian accordionist Raimondas Sviackevicius won the first prize in the piano accordion section and the Exclusive Golden Lyra Award (highest prize of the competition), which was presented by the Minister of Teramo Province to the best competitor (chosen from the piano and button accordion sections). The jury, which included Gervasio Marcosignori (President), Filippo Maria Caramazza (composer and flutist), Bruno Bizzarri (pianist) and Roberto Fossemo judged a number of categories for accordionists aged under 12, 16, 18 years and open age limit as well as classes for classical and entertainment music. Evening concerts included performances by the "Castellina-pasi" Accordion Orchestra, "Rondo Veneziano" Orchestra, "Citta di Recoaro terme" Accordion Orchestra and soloist Gervasio Marcosignori which were broadcast by The National Italian television station Raitre. |

Accordionist Archie MacFarlane has formed the duo Archie and Farquhar, who will release their CD "She's Good on the Croft" at a CD launch party on August 18th in Edinbane (a little village north of Skye). The CD features 12 tracks, many of which are new tunes based on the West Highland style including "The Tongadale", "Red Cuillin" and "Zurich Blues" (accordion with a hip hop beat and some gangster rap!). Macedonian accordionist Toni Pecanov performed his own four part composition entitled Lamentoso, Dialogue, Crauing and Scherzzo at a concert recently. This year's Val Tidone International Music Competition confirmed the growing European reputation of this prestigious event, organized by the local councils of Pianello Val Tidone, Agazzano, Borgonovo Val Tidone and Nibbiano in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the Emilia Romagna regional council and the Piacenza provincial council. Artistic director Livio Bollani will also oversee next year's event. The event, which featured concerts as well as various competitions, awarded over 25 million lira in prizes to 270 participants from over thirty countries. The jury included well-known personalities such as pianist Lazar Berman, Jacques Grimbert, Andrea Talmelli, Tomislav Baynov, Natalia Tomic, Carlo Levi Minzi, Siro Saracino, Giuseppe Colardo, Jean-Marie Geiser, Jean-Marc Fabiano, Radjap Shaikhoutdinov, Ermanno Melato, Ricardas Sviackevicius, Renzo Ruggieri, Pierino Miretti, Luca Belcastro and Fiorenzo Marchionni. Concerts featured the Florence Saxophone Quartet, R. Shaikhoutdinov (accordion), Renzo Ruggieri Group, Milonga Quintet and "Choros" (a dance company from Piacenza). Contributed by Joanna Arnold Rick Langley, 54, passed away unexpectedly on August 3rd at his home in Bradenton, Florida, USA. Rick was the owner of "Music, Music" in Bradenton, Florida and spent his life devoted to the accordion and his family through music. He is best known for his group, "The Poor Mon Steel Drum Band" which kept a steady performance calendar in the state of Florida for many years. Rick studied under Russ Nyberg and Larry Malmberg in Minneapolis, Minnesota and won top honors at the 1966 American Accordionists Association, United States Accordion Championship. Rick's vibrant style and sense of humor will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife Glenda, professional accordionists Dee Langley (sister) and "Skeets" Langley (brother) and Ryan (son).
