6th International Accordion Week - Portugal

The 6th International Accordion Week will be held from July 15th to 23rd in Alcobaça (center of Portugal). The event, organized by the Music-School Serenata, Anibal Freire and the Accordion Association of Alcobaça, will include 14 concerts and a seminar with Peter Soave (USA). Guest performers include Viatcheslav Semionov, Natalie Semionov and Alexander Dmitriev (Russia), Duo Vyonov (Bulgaria), Peter Soave (USA), Ensemble Melodie (Ukraine) Dujo Paris-Moscovo and the Alcobaça Accordion Orchestra.

 
Galla Rini Accordion Camp - USA

International Competition in Marseille - France

Accordionists from Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and Yugoslavia participated in the International competition Prix Azzola and Prix Zolotarjejw in Marseille from June 10th to 12th, under the artistic direction of Jean Marc Fabiano. The international jury included President Paolo Picchio, Jean Louis Noton, Vladimir Zubitsky, Anibal Freire, Amaya Paillet, Ernesto Gordini, Jean-Pierre Moreau, Jacques Mornet, Aurélien Noel, Tony Russo, Claude Thomain and Vojin Vasovic. The youngest star of the competition was four year old Pauline Fabiano (pictured).

Results:

  • Prix Azzola: 1st - Nicolas Massoutié (France), 2nd - Stéphane Plouvin (France)
  • Prix Zolotarjew: 1st - Boban Nikolic (Yugoslavia), 2nd - Sébastien Authemayou (France)
 
Summer Festival in Lithuania

The 6th Summer Accordion Festival and Seminar will be held from August 7th to 16th at the S. Vainiunas Music School in Palanga organized by the Lithuanian Accordion Association. Event leaders and artistic directors are Professor Ricardas Sviackevicius (President of the LAA) and Professor Eduardas Gabnys (Vice President of the LAA) who will also conduct a massed accordion orchestra performance in the Palanga concert Arena on the final day of the festival.

Over 100 accordion teachers and performers will attend the seminar, which will also include Masterclasses by guest tutors, and Lithuanian pedagogues and teachers who will give open lessons including well known bayanist Professor R. Shaikhoutdinov (Russia) and accordionist and composer Professor B. Dowlasz (Poland).

Each evening concerts will be held with performers including Raimondas Sviackevicius, Danielius Rozovas, Duo E. Gabnys & G. Savkovas, "Concertino" quintet, jazz player K. Stonkus and others. For further information email Lithuanian Accordion Association: laa@takas.lt

Guy Klucevsek Performs at Milan International Jazz Festival - Italy

Well known accordionist Guy Klucevsek recorded music this month (with fellow accordionist, Alan Bern) in Briosco, Italy for a new, soon-to-be-released album on the Winter & Winter label. Alan Bern is prominent as the accordionist, pianist and composer of the popular Klezmer group "Brave Old World".

On June 18th, Klucevsek performed at the Milan International Jazz Festival in Italy with the group "Charms of the Night Sky" in an outdoor concert attended by thousands. Both die-hard jazz fans and music lovers turned out for this musical extravaganza.

In late June Guy will perform with the Trisha Brown Dance Company and Dave Douglas Band in the USA. For further details see Future Events.

 
Annual Tag Der Harmonika - Austria

The annual "Tag der Harmonika", held on June 18th in Fürstenfeld (Styria) included competition categories for accordion soloists, duos, virtuoso accordion, orchestras, ensembles and also for the "Steirische Harmonika" (Styrian Harmonica) which has become very popular recently. An outstanding performance was given by the Polish Trio "Ars harmonica" who played "Kyrillikata" (J. Grekow /P. Chololowicz).

"Siberian Mosaic" Performance in Osaka - Japan

Russian traditional instrumental ensemble "Siberian Mosaic" performed at "El Theater" in the Osaka Prefectural Labor Center on June 23rd. The ensemble (which includes accordionist Gennady Krivoshein) was founded in Irkutsk in 1981 and have traveled to Japan six times. They have also toured Poland, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany. Their program focus is Russian traditional folk music.

German Accordion Awards - Germany

The Duo Nebl & Nebl (accordion and clarinet) will perform at a gala concert at the "German Accordion Awards" in Baden-Baden on June 24th. Accordionist Andreas Nebl who graduated in Trossingen (where he studied under Professor Hugo Noth) is currently studying under Professor Ivano Battiston in Florence, Italy.

Andreas and his brother Frank (solo clarinet player at the State Philharmonic in Halle) will both be jury members at the "Accordion Chamber Music" competition category of the awards, which run from June 23rd to 25th. For further details email: franknebl@foni.net

 
Master Classes in Portugal

Accordionist Vladimir Zubitsky gave two Master Class in Portugal during the 6th Festival Internacional de Musica de Castel Brabco "Primavera Musical" in early June. This was the first time the classical accordion had participated in this prestigious festival, which was held at the Conservatory of Castel Branco and Conservatory of Viseu. On June 6th a successful concert was given by solo accordionists and the Viseu Conservatory Accordion Orchestra in the Teatro Viriato.

Madeleine Church Concert - France

Bruno MauriceOn June 18th accordionist Bruno Maurice played in a concert celebration and tribute to General De Gaulle and the French resistance during the second world war, held at the Madeleine Church in Paris. Bruno's performance with the French Army Choir and the "Garde Républicaine" Symphonic Orchestra included well known songs from the war period. Bruno also gave a solo performance of "Don Rhapsody" (Semionov) to illustrate the presence of Russian combatants during the war. This popular celebration concert attracted over 1500 people.

 
Accordionist Performs with Ethnic Dance Theatre Orchestra - USA

ATG member and accordionist Dee Langley has recorded music with the Ethnic Dance Theatre Orchestra for a new CD to be released later this year. The album contains folk songs and dances from Albania, Bulgaria, France, Georgia (Ossatia), Macedonia, Romania, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The eight piece folk orchestra under the direction of Gordy Able includes violin, gadulka, brac & guitar, clarinet, flute, tin whistle, bass, middle eastern drums and accordion. "Trekzak en Botterdag" - Netherlands

The annual "Trekzak en Botterdag" for diatonic buttonboxes and the preservation of "Botters" (old wooden fisherman ships) was held at the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen on June 16th. The museum gives a view of the life in past years of this and other old fisherman's towns around the former inland sea (Zuiderzee). Hundreds of people "armed" with a buttonbox enjoyed free entrance to play at different spots in the vast area of the museum, which is in itself a small fisherman village. Music in a variety of styles such as Dutch, Breton, French, Irish, English, German and shanties was enjoyed.

 
Emter Family Dinner Theater - USA

The Emter Family of accordionists have opened a Dinner Theater in Jamestown, North Dakota, where they perform each evening. Their repertoire consists of heritage-rich polkas and waltzes, grass roots country and Gospel, as well as patriotic and Christmas songs. The family also adds harmony vocals to many of their selections.

The official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony with the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce was held on June 3rd. Future plans include Saturday evening shows, a Sunday Gospel brunch and Christmas shows after Thanksgiving. For further details email: emterfamily@buffalocity.net

Successful Concerts - South Africa

Duo 2000 performed successful house concerts on June 10th and 11th in Emmarentia, Johannesburg. Their program included three new pieces Pizzicato Polka (Leo Delibes), Aragonaise from Le Cid Ballet (Jules Massenet) and Spring Song (Mendelssohn), which were well received by the audience. The concerts were part of a series held on the first weekend of each month, but were postponed one week because of the Duo's performance at the recent Bridal Exhibition. The duo plan to begin recording their next CD in July.

 
Ireland's K & S Accordion Orchestra Visits Prague - Czech Republic

The K&S Accordion Orchestra are Ireland's sole representative in the forthcoming European Accordion Orchestra Festival in Prague, Czech Republic on June 23rd and 24th. The twenty three member orchestra will tour for six days visiting three spa towns in Western Bohemia in addition to Prague. They will compete in the Light Classical Music section and the Youth Orchestra section at the event. Their repertoire will include the Irish Suite, Music for Three Teddybears, Salute to Souza and Italian Suite.

New Orleans Bay Food and Music Festival - USA

Jon HammondAccordionist Jon Hammond performed at the 12th Annual New Orleans by the Bay Food and Music Festival in the Shoreline Ampitheatre, Mountain View California on June 10th and 11th. Over 10,000 people attended each day of the festival which included guests Dr. John, The Neville Brothers and Los Hombres Calientes.

Corporate sponsors Hewlett Packard hosted a VIP cocktail reception announcing a Scholarship Program, music was provided by "Jon Hammond's Late Rent Session Men" which included Larry Schneider (saxophone) and Barry Finnerty (guitar). Their program included original compositions, Lydia's Tune, No X-cess Baggage and "Late Rent" - Hammond's theme song from his television show, The Jon Hammond Show. Jon also played two solo sets daily in "Lucky's Bar" on accordion, piano and organ. Festival organizers have invited Jon to perform at next year's festival.

 
Successful "Handörgeli" Meeting in Albtal - Germany

Almost a quarter century after their first contact, German Diatonic Accordion Clubs are currently celebrating the tenth "Handörgeler" Meeting in Albtal, Waldshut region. Over 100 musicians attended the meeting, which takes place annually. The cities of Norden-Norddeich, Heidelberg and Albtal take turns in hosting the event.

This year's meeting was a great success for the diatonic instruments which are threatened to become extinct. The community hall in Immeneich was filled to capacity and the musical styles of the three clubs ranged from traditional folk music to contemporary rock, with show pieces played in between, adding interest to the program. The next meeting in Albtal will take place in 2003.

Accordionist Performs on Morning TV Show - USA

Accordionist Pete Nalda (of the group Rumbullion) sat in as guest accordionist with the Penny Jo Pullus Band on the AM morning show on channel 7 shown locally in Austin, Texas on June 15th. Their program included "Best Texas Grocery" and "Faithless Heart" from Penny Jo's new CD "Lucky No. 7". Pete's sidekick guide dog Romi was also in attendance.

 
Fisorchestra Italiana in Milan with Peppino Principe - Italy

The province of Milan has organized "Idropark Fila", a summer event taking place in the largest park of the city (near Linate). On July 7th the Fisorchestra Italiana accordion orchestra will hold a concert in the park featuring Peppino Principe.

Stan Rogers Folk Music Festival - Canada

Accordionist Len Wallace has just completed a concert tour to Bloomington, Illinois, Seattle, Washington and California (USA), performing at universities, workshops and radio stations.

From June 30th to July 2nd, Len will perform at the Stan Rogers Folk Music Festival in Canso, Nova Scotia, Canada. He will also take part in a "Labour Music and Protest Song" workshop with James Keelaghan and Eric Bogle. For further details email: lwallace@mnsi.net

 
Deffner's Accordion Music Catalog Grows - USA

Ernest Deffner Publications, the firm that boasts the largest catalogue of accordion sheet music, study methods and song collections in the United States, recently added two new books. The first, No. 967756 "Richard Galliano, Volume 1," contains 12 original pieces which exemplify the blues of Paris. This 44-page collection blends jazz, swing and musette to create shimmering, mellow harmonies.

The second is No. 97211BCD "100 Irish Tunes for Piano Accordion," by David DiGiuseppe, an array of Irish jigs, reels and polkas including common session tunes and over 20 transcriptions from recordings of famous accordionists. This 118-page book and CD set will allow even the novice accordionist to participate in a traditional Irish session.
